The UK operations of Coveris, a European maker of flexible plastic and paper packaging for food, healthcare and industrial customers.
Coveris makes flexible packaging, meaning bags, films and wraps made from plastic and paper. Its customers are in food, medical, pet food, agriculture and industrial markets, and the company describes its focus as eliminating waste in all its forms. It works in two areas, Consumer and Healthcare, and Technical and Industrial, and has a recycling business called ReCover. Across Europe it reports about 2,500 employees, 18 production sites and about 3,000 customers on its current About page.
In its own words, Coveris describes a united team with a shared vision of a more sustainable future, and it lists three values: Make it Right, Make it Happen and Make it Better. It also points to in-house expertise across the production chain, research and development, and laboratory facilities as strengths. Those are the company's claims and we have not tested them independently.
The UK evidence is thinner than for the other companies in this set and should be treated with care. A trade article about new printing presses, undated but written ahead of 2016, names UK sites at Gainsborough in Lincolnshire and Burnley in Lancashire, and says the Burnley site had absorbed Learoyd Packaging. Separately, Coveris announced the purchase of four04 Packaging, based in Norwich, which makes flexible packaging for fresh food, bakery and mailing, and said it would expand its UK presence. Companies House lists Coveris Flexibles (Gainsborough) UK Limited. The current About page does not list UK sites, so please check the current site list.
Burnley is also where Coveris took over Learoyd Packaging, so the UK business has grown partly by joining firms together. Printed film packaging is made with flexographic printing, where flexible printing plates press ink onto film in several colours at high speed, and the sites invested in eight-colour presses to supply dairy, snack, bakery and confectionery customers. No culture or people statements were available for the UK businesses, so we do not describe them.
Roles in a packaging factory include press operators, printing and colour specialists, extrusion and film technicians, maintenance engineers, quality and food-safety technicians, designers who work out how a pack looks and protects the food, sales and customer service staff, and planners and logistics teams. If you like design and technology, chemistry or art, this sector shows how the pack on a supermarket shelf is engineered as well as designed.
