Engine and emissions systems manufacturer · Automotive & Mobility

Cummins UK

The UK arm of Cummins, which assembles diesel engines and emissions systems at its Darlington campus and is developing a hydrogen engine.

About Cummins UK

Cummins Ltd runs a large engineering and manufacturing site in Darlington, County Durham, part of the American engine company Cummins Inc. Darlington assembles on average more than 250 diesel engines a day, and its Emission Solutions plant makes aftertreatment systems that clean exhaust gases. The engines are used in trucks, buses and coaches, construction, agriculture, defence, marine and power generation.

Cummins describes itself as an industry leader in reliable power solutions for more than 100 years. We did not find a formal mission statement on the Darlington page. The site has operated in the UK for more than 50 years, and in 2022 it passed 1.5 million mid-range engines built. Emission Solutions moved to Darlington in 2008, and a new Powertrain Test Facility was announced in July 2024.

The Darlington campus lists more than 1,900 employees and over 66,000 engines produced in 2021. Its technical centre is developing a hydrogen internal combustion engine for trucks, excavators and other equipment, with support from the Advanced Propulsion Centre UK and the UK government. The page says the engine could prevent over 11 million tons of carbon a year. That is a company claim about potential, so treat it as an ambition rather than a result. The page also notes that Darlington's engine business is part of a wider site that includes Technical Operations and Cummins Business Services, so some jobs there are in support functions rather than on the engine line. The page says on-highway aftertreatment for B and L Series engines has been made in Darlington for over 12 years, assembled alongside the bus and truck engines, so the site combines engines and exhaust systems under one address.

On culture, the page says employees logged more than 2,000 volunteer hours in the community in 2021, and describes a diverse team. We did not find a published list of values on the page we read, so look at Cummins' global materials if this matters to you.

The page names a wide range of roles: engineers from apprentices to PhD level, manufacturing experts, marketing and sales staff, and people in finance, business services and regulatory affairs. Engines are changing fast, with cleaner diesel, hydrogen and electrified options all in development, so this is a place where engineering work is shifting in interesting ways.
