Cuvva

A London insurtech that sells flexible, short-term insurance through a mobile app.

About Cuvva

Cuvva sells flexible car insurance through a phone app. Instead of paying for a whole year, you can buy cover for an hour, a day or a week, which suits people who borrow a car, drive rarely, or need cover for a short job. It also sells learner driver, van, motorhome and drive-away cover, and says its mission is to make cars "multiplayer", meaning easier for more people to use and share.

Cuvva was founded by Freddy Macnamara, who wanted insurance by the hour so he could drive other people's cars. He told INSEAD Knowledge that premiums should reflect how people actually drive, not their education or social networks. The company launched its first product, Cuvva for Sharers, in October 2015, offering cover from one hour to 28 days. By June 2017 it had sold more than a million hours of cover. Sources differ slightly on dates (the company says its first policy was in 2015, while a job advert says 2016), so treat the exact year with care. Cuvva is based in London and is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (the FCA, the UK financial regulator).

Cuvva says it wants to make insurance more flexible and fair, and describes shared car use as good for drivers' finances and for the environment. Its job adverts state a mission of giving everyone affordable access to a car anytime, anywhere. These are the company's own words.

On its own site, Cuvva says it has served over 1.8 million customers, and the main products are temporary car insurance (one hour to one week), learner driver insurance, temporary van insurance, motorhome and campervan insurance, drive-away insurance and international driving licences. It also lets people borrow or lend a car, and launched Cuvva car clubs in 2024. Insurance Business reported in August 2025 that its underwriting partners include Wakam and ERS and that it has an agreement with Tesla dealerships. The same article reported that Cuvva was exploring a possible sale, so check its current ownership.

Cuvva says it has about 100 people who build its app technology in-house, and its customer support team works every day of the year. A job advert describes a four-day week with Fridays off, flexible hybrid working from a London office, published salary bands, private medical insurance and a monthly insurance allowance, and says strong ideas can come from anywhere and thoughtful challenge is encouraged. Typical roles are engineering, product, design and customer operations. We did not find a graduate scheme, apprenticeship or internship, so check its careers page.
