A premium health, fitness and racquets club group that began with one tennis-led family club in Heston, West London, in 1982 and now runs over a hundred clubs in the UK and Ireland.
David Lloyd Clubs offers a mix that most gyms do not: fitness, tennis and other racquet sports, swimming, spa facilities and family activities under one roof. Its own company page calls the group Europe's leading premium health, fitness and wellness group, with 133 clubs in nine countries, of which 103 are in the UK and the Republic of Ireland. It uses three brands, David Lloyd Clubs, Harbour Clubs and David Lloyd Meridian Spa and Fitness (in Germany). Facilities named on the page include gyms, heated indoor and outdoor pools, racquet courts, group exercise studios and spas, plus a digital platform and member app.
The business was founded in 1982 by David Lloyd, a former professional tennis player and Great Britain's Davis Cup captain. The first club opened in Heston, West London, on a 123-acre site, and it still operates. His son Scott later helped create Next Generation Clubs, which merged with the business. The brand relaunched as David Lloyd Clubs in 2016, and the 100th UK club opened in 2022. The company's stated vision is 'My Club for Life': it wants its clubs to be a central part of family life, and says it has helped families lead healthy, active lives for over 40 years. It also says environmental, social and governance principles sit at the core of its strategy.
Wikipedia lists Hatfield, Hertfordshire as head office, though the company page does not give an address. Clubs are spread across England, as well as Scotland, Wales and Ireland. We found only the Heston club named on the company's own page, and Emersons Green in Bristol appears in a company press release as one of three Bristol clubs. The company has said it wants to add around four new clubs a year.
The company says about 66% of members are couples and families, and that the average member stays for around seven years, which points to a culture built on long relationships with families rather than quick sign-ups. It reports employing over 8,000 people (Wikipedia gives about 10,000, so treat the number as approximate). Its teams include experts in fitness, racquet sports and swimming, which means coaches and instructors for children and adults. Those are the company's own claims.
A club this size needs many different jobs. There are tennis and racquets coaches, swimming teachers, gym instructors and personal trainers, lifeguards, spa therapists, children's activity staff, front-of-house and membership teams, and the managers who run each club. Behind the clubs sit head office teams in areas such as property, marketing, digital, finance and people. If you play a racquet sport, teach swimming, or enjoy working with families, there is a role in which those interests become a career.
