A family-owned Scottish media group based in Dundee, behind The Beano, The Courier, the Press and Journal, Findmypast and many other brands.
DC Thomson is a privately owned media company based in Dundee, Scotland. It publishes newspapers such as The Courier, the Evening Telegraph, the Sunday Post and the Press and Journal, and comics and magazines including The Beano, The Dandy, Commando, Oor Wullie and The Broons, My Weekly and This England. It also owns Findmypast, the family history business, and the data and cloud company Brightsolid.
The company describes itself as "purpose-led and future-focused", saying it will "champion, entertain and bring together our communities". It calls itself "a family business with a 200-year-old heritage" and says its brands "improve lives". Its homepage presents it as the "home of some of the UK's best loved brands", with Beano Studios offering the line "Being a kid never gets old".
The business grew out of Charles Alexander and Company, the publisher of the Dundee Courier. David Couper Thomson took it over in 1884 and the DC Thomson name was adopted in 1905. Dundee was once known for the "Three Js" of jute, jam and journalism, and the company is still headquartered there, with its main operations on Kingsway. It also has offices in Aberdeen, Glasgow, Manchester and London. A 2016 figure put its workforce at about 2,148 people.
Because it covers newspapers, comics, genealogy, events and technology, the company employs a wide range of people. These include journalists and editors, comic artists and writers, designers, software and data specialists, events teams, marketing and sales staff. The company reports digitising historic archives for the Imperial War Museum and British Library through Findmypast, and Dundee data centres through Brightsolid, which began in 1995 as Scotland Online. It has also changed with the times: in 2023 and 2024 it closed some titles and reduced jobs as it reshaped its media portfolio, and it has since closed its Pure Radio station.
DC Thomson's careers message is "Your career, your impact. Shape tomorrow with us", inviting staff to become "a catalyst for change, innovation and positive impact". It also says that as a family-owned business, sustainability is in its DNA. These are the company's own words. If you like the idea of working on much-loved British brands, or in a city outside London, it is a distinctive place to look at.
