A UK legal technology company whose Microsoft Word add-in helps lawyers draft, review and navigate complex documents.
Definely makes software that works inside Microsoft Word to help lawyers read, check and write long legal documents. Contracts can run to hundreds of pages, with definitions and cross-references that are hard to keep track of, and one small change can cause problems on page 80. Definely's tools help lawyers see how a document fits together, spot mistakes and use AI help while they stay in the program they already use. It is a legal technology (or 'legal tech') company, not a law firm.
The company's website says it was founded by two former Magic Circle lawyers, Nnamdi Emelifeonwu and Feargus MacDaeid, who met at the law firm Freshfields. Feargus is registered blind and found complex contracts harder to navigate than his colleagues did, so the two first set out to make legal documents more accessible, then realised the tool could help lawyers with everyday problems more broadly. A technology directory dates the company to 2017. Nnamdi is chief executive and Feargus is chief legal strategy officer. The office is at Aldgate Tower, 2 Leman Street, London E1 8FA.
Its stated mission is: 'Our mission is to create tools that simplify the way the world understands information.' The careers page also lists four values: be human (treat people like adults, be honest and support each other), go beyond (think creatively and welcome different views), geniusly simple (avoid over-engineering and communicate clearly) and proactive not reactive (understand first, then act).
The Definely Review Suite has five named tools. Read helps you navigate and understand complex contracts. Proof audits a document and fixes errors. Cascade shows the knock-on effects of a change or mark-up. Enhance does AI-powered contract analysis. Vault indexes documents and searches precedents (earlier examples). The company says it has over 150 customers, including law firms and in-house legal teams, and its website names Dentons, A&O Shearman, DLA Piper, KPMG, Samsung and BT Group.
Its careers page describes a collaborative workplace where people challenge each other constructively and take ownership, with quarterly team socials. It features staff from People and Talent, Marketing, Software Engineering and Product Management. The hiring steps are a chat with the People team, a conversation with the hiring manager, a practical exercise relevant to the role, and a conversation with the chief executive and VP People. UK benefits listed include 25 days' holiday plus up to 8 public holidays, a day off for your birthday, private healthcare, a learning budget and the ability to work remotely from anywhere for up to four weeks a year. We found no graduate scheme or internship, so check the careers page and jobs board for entry-level roles.
