DHL Express UK

The UK arm of DHL's express business, moving time-critical parcels and documents through hubs at Heathrow and East Midlands Airport to over 220 countries.

About DHL Express UK

DHL Express UK moves time-sensitive parcels and documents into and out of the UK. Comparison guides describe it as a time-definite international shipping service that also offers fast domestic services, and say it reaches more than 220 countries and territories. In the UK it works with an air operation, DHL Air UK, a British cargo airline wholly owned by Deutsche Post, which carries freight for DHL's parcel and express network in Europe. In 2025 DHL agreed to merge its separate UK e-commerce delivery operations with Evri, so the DHL name now mainly means the express and international side of the business.

DHL Air UK has a clear history. It began as Elan Air Freight, a joint venture between Air Bridge Carriers and DHL International formed on 11 October 1982, started flying night freight charters in April 1983, and was renamed DHL Air on 16 May 1989. It received a UK Civil Aviation Authority operator certificate in November 2001 and flight operations began that December. We could not read a DHL UK purpose or values statement, so we have not invented one. We can say that the company is part of a global group and that its UK activities are tied to international trade.

The UK sites we found are large. Wikipedia says DHL Air UK is registered in Orbital Park, Hounslow, London, and has its main base and main office at East Midlands Airport, in the DHL building at EMA Cargo West. A 2020 trade report says DHL added a 17,800 square metre unit to its leased space at the SEGRO Logistics Park at East Midlands Airport, taking its leased space there to close to 83,000 square metres. In March 2017 the Transport Secretary opened DHL Express's Southern Hub, a 150,000 square foot site on the western edge of Heathrow with more than 750 employees and capacity for 28,000 items an hour.

Ian Wilson, then DHL Express UK's chief executive, said at the 2017 Heathrow opening that the hub meets customers' needs "long into the future". Wikipedia reports that DHL Air UK had 422 employees in April 2022 and operates about 20 freighter aircraft, including Boeing 757, 767 and 777 freighters. These numbers cover the airline only, not the whole DHL UK workforce, which we could not find. We did not find a first-party page about working culture, so we make no claims about it.

An express business needs many kinds of people. Pilots, aircraft engineers and ground crew keep the air operation going, while hub operatives and shift teams sort parcels overnight. Couriers and drivers collect and deliver, and customs and compliance specialists handle the paperwork for goods crossing borders. Customer service, sales, IT, finance and people teams support the network. If you are interested in global trade, aviation or how a parcel can cross the world in a day or two, DHL's UK operation shows many sides of that story.
