A Carlisle-based rail freight company, owned by the UK public sector, that moves nuclear materials and also carries shipping containers, construction materials and other freight across Britain.
Direct Rail Services, known as DRS, is a rail freight company based in Carlisle, Cumbria. It was set up in 1995 to move nuclear materials by rail for the nuclear industry, and that remains a core part of its work. Over time it has added other freight, including shipping containers for retailers such as Tesco, construction materials, and passenger charter and locomotive hire work. It is owned by the public sector: Wikipedia says that since 2021 it has been managed as part of Nuclear Transport Solutions, which sits within the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.
A history page on a rail industry news site says DRS was founded on 13 February 1995 by British Nuclear Fuels Limited to carry nuclear material safely and efficiently. It ran its first train in 1996, moved its base from Sellafield to Kingmoor in Carlisle in 1998, entered the general freight market in 2001 and opened a new head office at Kingmoor Business Park in 2016. We found no formal mission statement, so we have not invented one. The themes in its history are safety, sustainability and community: it cites a nuclear-transport record without any release of radioactive material by 2015, uses a lower-carbon fuel called HVO to cut emissions, and holds open days that have raised money for charity.
DRS's bases are spread around Britain. The sources name Kingmoor in Carlisle as headquarters and main depot, Sellafield in Cumbria as the original base, depots at Crewe and York, Inverness, the Georgemas terminal in Caithness built for shipments from Dounreay, and a fuelling point at Motherwell that opened in 2023. Its customers include nuclear industry bodies, Network Rail, Tesco, Asda and several passenger train operators, according to the history page. Its fleet is made up of modern diesel locomotives, including Class 66, Class 68 and the Class 88 dual-mode locomotive.
On people and culture, the sources we found are mainly about the business, not its staff. We found no headcount and no staff accounts. Because DRS handles nuclear material, it is closely regulated, and the Office for Nuclear Regulation published reports on it in 2025, so safety and compliance are a large part of the daily work. We have not read the details and would not draw conclusions from them here.
Jobs at a rail freight operator include train drivers and shunters, controllers who run trains from a control room, locomotive engineers, safety and security specialists, planners, customer account staff, and finance, HR and IT teams. Working with nuclear freight adds careful security and safety-case work to the mix. If you enjoy engineering, you like the idea of work where doing things correctly matters, or you are interested in energy and the environment, DRS is an unusual and interesting place to consider.
