The publisher of the Daily Mail, The Mail on Sunday, Metro and MailOnline, based at Northcliffe House in Kensington, London.
DMG Media is the media arm of Daily Mail and General Trust. Its titles include the Daily Mail, The Mail on Sunday, Metro and the MailOnline website. Metro and metro.co.uk, the free newspaper and its website, are among its widest-reaching brands: a reference source gives Metro's circulation as 891,386 in September 2025, and says it overtook The Sun in print circulation in 2018. The group's wider reference page also links it to The i Paper and New Scientist, though check the company's own site for the current list.
The Daily Mail was launched in 1896 by Harold Harmsworth and his brother Alfred, and control has stayed with the Harmsworth family, through the Viscounts Rothermere. The company became fully private in January 2022. We did not find a published mission statement for DMG Media in the pages we read, so please check its official website for how it describes its purpose.
In the UK, the headquarters is Northcliffe House in Kensington, London, where the group moved from Fleet Street in 1988. Metro began in London in March 1999 with a print run of 85,000, handed out at Underground stations, launched its website in July 2001, has never endorsed a political party, and is now given out to commuters at bus and rail stations and shopping centres. Its content is produced mainly in Kensington, with a small separate team producing a Scottish edition. A reference source gave an editor, Deborah Arthurs, in post since 2023, when the print and online teams were merged.
A national news group employs many types of people. Reporters, news and features editors, sub-editors, photographers, video journalists and sports writers produce stories, while audience, social media, product and engineering teams run the websites and apps. Advertising, marketing, finance, legal and distribution teams support the business. A reference source gave a headcount of 4,034 in 2021, but that figure covered the whole parent group, not DMG Media alone.
Metro and the Daily Mail are good examples to read side by side, as one is designed for a short commute and the other for a longer read. Metro's own editorial teams for print and online were separate from 2014 and merged again in 2023. Doing this shows how format shapes the jobs behind each title. Check DMG Media's official website for current information on brands and teams.
