A British delivery group that grew out of the Document Exchange for lawyers and now moves heavy and awkward freight, parcels and documents across the UK and Ireland.
DX is a UK and Ireland delivery business. Its results statement describes it as a provider of delivery solutions, including parcel freight, secure courier and logistics, for business and residential addresses. It has two main parts. DX Freight specialises in next-day delivery of freight that is irregular in size or weight, using one-person and two-person crews and a logistics service, and it estimates it holds about a quarter of that market. DX Express covers parcels and the Document Exchange, which sends documents and mail between members. Its registered office is at Ditton Park, Datchet, near Slough.
The company began in 1975 as a Document Exchange service for the legal sector, and for many years most UK law firms used it to swap papers. Wikipedia says it first grew as a Hays business, was demerged in 2004, bought DX Freight (formerly Nightfreight) in 2012 and joined the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange in 2014. A turnaround plan began in 2018 under the current leadership, and Ian Truesdale is chief executive. We did not find a mission or values statement. The company's results statement says it aims to meet "the highest standards of corporate and individual conduct" and stresses high levels of customer service.
DX works from depots across Great Britain. Its results statement names new or expanded sites at Paisley, West Bromwich, Plymouth, Heathrow, Basildon, Haydock, Bracknell and Deeside, a Norwich depot that opened in August 2023, and planned sites in Preston, Stafford and Middleton, near Manchester, with a regional hub being built in Nottingham. It has five two-person super-sites and a central hub. DX took over 15 former Tuffnells sites, and the statement says more than 350 former Tuffnells employees joined DX. It also bought a former Tuffnells site in Ipswich.
On people and culture, DX describes its team as "very talented and experienced" and describes its leadership as a turnaround team that arrived in 2017. These are the company's own claims. The statement also says compliance training is refreshed every year. On the environment, DX says it aims to run 65 electric vans, supporting a partnership with IKEA, and to cut its carbon footprint by 20% by 2035. Wikipedia gives inconsistent employee numbers (between 3,000 and 5,300), so we do not quote a total.
Delivering a washing machine, a sofa or a pallet needs more than a courier. DX employs drivers and crews for its two-person service, depot and warehouse operatives, network and hub controllers, customer service staff, sales teams, IT and data staff and fleet and engineering teams, as well as finance and people teams at head office. If you want to see a business that has reinvented itself several times, from a legal document exchange to a heavy-freight specialist, this is a useful company to follow.
