mobile network operator (BT Group) · Telecommunications & Mobile Networks

EE

A UK mobile network operator, part of BT Group, that launched the UK's first 4G network in 2012 and runs 4G and 5G across the country.

About EE

EE is one of the UK's main mobile network operators. It runs the networks behind many people's mobile phones, and also offers home broadband. The company runs 2G, 4G and 5G networks, and it closed its 3G network in February 2024 so that radio spectrum could be reused for newer technology. If you have used a phone with an EE SIM, in a shop or through a business, you have used a network that the company's engineers plan, build and maintain.

EE was formed in 2010 when the UK businesses of Orange and T-Mobile joined together, first under the name Everything Everywhere. The EE brand launched on 30 October 2012, alongside the UK's first 4G network, and the old Orange and T-Mobile brands were phased out in 2014 and 2015. BT bought EE, and the deal completed in January 2016. EE became part of BT's consumer business, which in 2018 was organised around three brands: BT, EE and Plusnet. We could not find a formal mission statement. A 2018 strategy described on Wikipedia talked about keeping customers connected through combined mobile and broadband services.

Wikipedia lists EE's headquarters as London and gives other main offices in Bristol, Darlington, Doxford, Greenock, Merthyr Tydfil, North Tyneside, Plymouth and Leeds, with a hub in Sunderland. That spread is helpful to know if you live outside London, because it suggests that jobs in customer service, technology and operations are found in many parts of the UK. EE also has a large shop estate and has run store-within-a-store sites with other retailers. Its network work includes the Emergency Services Network, a contract awarded in late 2015.

EE has been a sponsor of the BAFTA film awards and Wembley Stadium, which shows how important brand and marketing teams are there. On culture, the pages we read say little, so we do not describe it. As part of BT Group, its people work alongside colleagues in other BT divisions, and the business needs network engineers, radio specialists, software and data teams, retail and contact-centre staff, marketers and finance and legal specialists. Wikipedia gives Claire Gillies as the current chief executive of the consumer division.

We have not researched specific entry routes. Because EE sits within BT Group, a good first step is to look at the BT Group careers site and filter for roles linked to EE. If you are still choosing subjects, maths, physics, computing and electronics are a strong foundation for the network side, while business, communication and languages suit commercial and customer-facing roles.
