automation, valves and instruments company (US-owned) · Manufacturing & Industrial Production

Emerson UK

The UK arm of a global automation company that supplies control systems, valves and measuring instruments, with a Leicester site and a service centre in Aberdeen.

About Emerson UK

Emerson describes itself as a global automation leader engineering the autonomous future. Its own site groups the business into automation systems, which are control and safety systems; discrete automation, such as valves, actuators and sensors; final control; measurement instrumentation, which includes flow, level, pressure and temperature instruments; and test and measurement. It serves industries including chemicals, oil and gas, power, water, food and drink, life sciences and marine. In the UK the business has traded for many years under names such as Emerson Process Management Limited, which is listed at Companies House.

The Emerson site we could read gives no formal mission statement. Its tagline is "Go Boldly", its heading is "Inspiring Our Passion for Progress", and its leadership page says the executive team inspires employees "to work toward leaving our world in a better place than we found it". The page links to a separate purpose and values page that was not included in the text we read, so we cannot quote it. The group is American and the UK arm is part of a worldwide network.

The clearest evidence of the UK footprint comes from two trade articles in November 2014. They reported an expansion of Emerson's Leicester facility, adding about 2,230 square metres to the existing site, with a new staging area where customers can test their control systems before delivery, known as factory acceptance testing. The same articles announced a new North Sea service centre in Aberdeen, described as a £20m investment, to support oil and gas installations. Emerson's Europe president at the time, Roel Van Doren, said the investment would help meet growing demand for projects in the UK and Europe. Companies House also lists Emerson Automation Solutions Actuation Technologies Limited. These sources are more than ten years old.

We found no staff stories, culture page or headcount for Emerson UK, and the executive page did not mention the UK at all. The Leicester articles describe a facility that builds, integrates and tests large control systems, which suggests engineers work in teams on customer projects, but that is our reading rather than a company claim. If you want to know what working there is like, you will need to look at Emerson's own pages.

The kinds of people a business like this employs include control systems engineers who configure and test automation, project engineers and managers, instrument and valve specialists, service engineers who travel to plants and platforms, software engineers, and sales, finance and supply chain staff. Electrical, instrumentation, chemical or mechanical engineering, computing, and maths all lead into this work, and the Aberdeen link makes it relevant for people interested in energy.
