A Warrington-based metal recycling company, owned by the Sheppard family, that collects and processes scrap metal at sites across the UK and abroad.
EMR, which stands for European Metal Recycling, describes itself as a global leader in metal recycling. It buys, collects, sorts and processes scrap metal and also recycles plastics from a range of waste streams. The metal is cleaned, shredded and sold on to be melted and made into new products, which saves the energy and raw materials needed to mine new ore. It sits within the circular economy and scrap sectors. On its UCAS employer profile EMR says it employs over 3,500 people, and lists around 2,000 in the UK.
EMR is privately owned. Wikipedia says it was founded in 1994 by Phillip Sheppard and that it is owned through the Ausurus Group by the Sheppard family, while its UCAS profile says its roots go back to the 1950s. The two sources do not agree on the start date, and we have not tried to settle it. EMR says it is privately owned with family values at its core, and that it cares about its people, customers, workplace and communities. Chris Sheppard is listed as chief executive on Wikipedia, though leadership may have changed since.
Its headquarters are at Westbrook in Warrington, Cheshire. The UCAS profile lists 19 UK locations: Ashford, Blaydon-on-Tyne, Boreham, Brentford, Newcastle upon Tyne, Cardiff, Wednesbury, Erith, Glasgow, Liverpool, Redcar, Middlesbrough, Mitcham, Newmarket, Rochester, Salford, and three sites in London. It also operates in Germany, the Netherlands and the United States. The site counts in our sources differ: the profile mentions both 130 operational sites and 70 sites, so we cannot give one reliable total.
On culture, the company's own profile says it offers diverse career opportunities and recognises and rewards its staff. We found no independent information on working life, and the profile is short, so these are claims we have not checked. A family-owned business of this kind often has long-serving staff, but we did not find a source for that and have not assumed it.
The jobs in a metal recycler cover a wide range. Yard operatives and crane and shredder operators sort and process metal, drivers and logistics teams move material by road and port, buyers and traders deal with suppliers and customers, engineers and mechanics keep heavy machinery running, and there are laboratory and quality staff, health and safety and environmental officers, and finance, IT and HR teams. If you like heavy machinery, trading, logistics or the engineering of turning old cars and appliances into new steel, EMR shows how big this industry is.
