The UK arm of Epic Games, maker of Fortnite and Unreal Engine, with UK roots in Sunderland/Newcastle, Guildford and Leamington Spa and current roles in London.
Epic Games is the company behind Fortnite and Unreal Engine, the tools used to build many of the world's biggest games. Its UK arm works on the engine and related technology, helping developers across Europe use it.
We did not find a formal mission statement on the pages we read. The closest statement is from founder and chief executive Tim Sweeney, who praised the UK team's work on Unreal Engine tools and technology when Epic took it on. Sweeney has also spoken about wanting to build games and tools of a standard that attract and keep a large player base.
Epic's UK presence began in 2014, when it rebranded the Pitbull Studio team in the north-east of England (the Sunderland and Newcastle area, formerly Midway Studios Newcastle) as Epic Games UK. It also had offices in Guildford and Leamington Spa. The new general manager, Robert Troughton, was to oversee UK operations and help Unreal Engine developers across Europe, and James Golding returned from Epic's US base to help from Guildford. Mike Gamble, who runs Unreal Engine licensing in Europe, was involved too. A current job board lists Epic roles in London.
Those London roles show what kind of people Epic employs in the UK: engine and graphics programmers, web engineers and machine learning engineers, plus paid research internships in machine learning and engine programming. The company's own words for the 2014 studio were a "fully integrated team driving Unreal Engine 4 development in the region".
The 2014 hiring plan included programmers, developer relations and support roles, so the UK team has always mixed building technology with helping customers. Epic's other UK offices may have changed since 2014, so check its careers site for current locations. The 2014 announcement also quoted Mike Gamble, who runs Unreal Engine licensing in Europe, saying the studio would let Epic "support Unreal Engine 4 developers across Europe on an entirely new level". Pitbull had already contributed to Unreal Engine, Gears of War and Fortnite before joining Epic, and Epic was founded in 1991 according to a job-board profile, so the UK team is part of a company with a long history of making both games and the tools behind them.
