network equipment and services company (Swedish group) · Telecommunications & Mobile Networks

Ericsson UK

The UK arm of the Swedish network-equipment maker, based in Reading, that builds, runs and supports the mobile networks many people in Britain use every day.

About Ericsson UK

Ericsson develops the technology that mobile networks are built from: the radio equipment on masts, the software that carries calls and data, and the services that keep it all running. In the UK its work centres on 5G, the latest generation of mobile networks, along with fixed wireless access (broadband delivered over the air) and network APIs, which let apps use features of the network. Its UK page says Ericsson's network services cover up to 80 million mobile subscriptions and connections in the UK, and it names projects with Vodafone, on connectivity at events, and with Three UK, on smarter and more sustainable networks.

The company says it has been connecting the UK for more than 120 years. Its UK site presents the work as helping to "shape the future of tech", with teams building, launching and fixing technology together. The page links to a longer purpose and vision statement, which we could not read, so we do not quote a formal mission. Ericsson's UK story also links to older British telecoms: it bought most of the Marconi assets in 2006, and the remaining UK services business became Telent, which is another company in this list.

The UK headquarters is in Thames Tower, opposite Reading station. A March 2018 announcement said staff from the old Guildford and Newbury offices would move there, and that the building would house a network operations centre that watches over more than 25,000 mobile base stations and half a million radio cells for UK operators. Ericsson also owns a growing family of businesses in Britain. Its Cradlepoint unit bought Quortus, a small Camberley company with 4G and 5G expertise, and its UK page lists Vonage, Red Bee Media and Ericsson Enterprise Wireless as group companies. Only the Reading office is listed on the UK page, so check the company site for any other locations.

On culture, the UK careers page highlights flexibility, mentoring, job swaps and taster sessions that let people try a different team. It mentions a UK wellbeing hub and employee-led LGBTQ+ and Women's networks, launched in 2020. The company points to a LinkedIn listing as a top 10 workplace for growing a tech career in 2024 and to the Sunday Times Best Places to Work list for 2024. These are the company's own claims and third-party rankings, not something we checked.

The roles at Ericsson UK reflect how a network is built and kept alive. Field Service teams keep networks reliable, Networks teams build products, solutions and services for customers, and Managed Services teams keep quality steady across customers' networks. Around them sit software, project, sales, finance and people functions. If you enjoy maths, physics, computing, electronics or solving practical problems, there are many ways in.
