About Expectation

Expectation is an award-winning, multi-genre independent television production company. It makes entertainment, comedy, drama and factual programmes. Past productions include Murder 24/7 (BBC Two), The Big Narstie Show and The Lateish Show with Mo Gilligan (Channel 4), Intelligence (Sky), In My Skin (BBC Three), Alma's Not Normal and Guilt (BBC Two). Current shows include Steph's Packed Lunch (Channel 4), This Is My House (BBC One) and a farming series with Jeremy Clarkson for Amazon.

Expectation was set up in 2017 by Tim Hincks, who used to lead Endemol Shine, and Peter Fincham, a former controller of BBC One and director of television at ITV. They were co-chief executives. When it launched, Hincks said the aim was to give creative people a home where they can do their best work, and it describes itself as a creatively-led indie. It launched with six departments: drama, comedy, factual entertainment, entertainment, reality and factual.

The company is based in West London and is backed by BBC Studios, which took a minority stake at launch. Broadcast magazine named it one of the ten most influential independents in the UK, according to its own profile. We did not find a list of other UK offices.

Its own profile talks about original ideas and formats, strong relationships with talent, and partnerships with broadcasters and distributors. Early senior hires included Nerys Evans as creative director for comedy and Nick Mather and Nick Samwell-Smith as creative directors for entertainment. Those are statements about the company as it presents itself, not outside reviews.

A company that covers comedy, entertainment, drama and factual employs development producers, researchers, production managers, directors, editors and many others. Its mix of shows is a good way to see which kind of programme you might like to work on. A creative-industries organisation that lists vacancies has a page for the company, which is a useful place to check. According to the launch report, Expectation began with BBC Worldwide, now BBC Studios, holding 24.9 per cent and a seat on the board. The founders brought experience from shows such as Catastrophe, Flowers, The Windsors, Pointless and Big Brother. The launch article said the company was developing ideas and talking to broadcasters, and the later profile shows the range of programmes it now makes for BBC, Channel 4, Sky, Dave and Amazon.
