A UK out-of-home advertising company known for its partnership with Transport for London across the Tube, Overground, DLR and Elizabeth line.
Exterion Media is an out-of-home advertising company. In 2016 Transport for London chose it as media partner for what TfL called the world's largest outdoor advertising contract, covering London Underground, London Overground, Tramlink, the Docklands Light Railway, Victoria Coach Station and the Elizabeth line once it opened. The contract covers more than 400 stations, which support over 30 million journeys a day according to TfL. The advertising strategy was branded "Hello London".
We did not find a formal mission statement. TfL's Graeme Craig said the partnership could act as "a catalyst for transforming our stations and the wider industry", and chief executive Shaun Gregory said it would change how advertising looks in the capital and how brands reach consumers. Its commercial promise is to put advertising where commuters are receptive. A TfL partnership also means helping to raise money for reinvestment in the transport network.
The business is London-focused. A 2019 City AM report describes new full-motion digital screens at five major Tube stations, including digital ribbons along the escalators at Waterloo and Oxford Street, earlier screens at King's Cross St Pancras, Piccadilly Circus and Tottenham Court Road that carried campaigns for Google, Disney and O2, a 21 square metre screen at London Bridge and plans for Liverpool Street and South Kensington. A 2018 Press Gazette report says it added 60 HD screens in 15 Tube stations carrying live Euronews.
People named in these reports include chief revenue officer Nigel Clarkson (2019), creative solutions director Richard Simkins (2018) and the 2016 chief executive. Simkins said the Tube serves about 4 million people daily, and the company ran a survey finding 69 per cent of Londoners want news while travelling. Reports describe a culture of working with a public partner and testing new formats, but they are trade coverage rather than the company's own words.
A London out-of-home business employs sales and planning teams working with brands and agencies, creative solutions staff who design formats, technology and screen operations teams, insight and research staff, and finance and people teams. A student interested in London transport, technology or advertising can see how these roles combine in screens they use on their commute.
