An independent UK studio that makes hand-crafted story games set in the Fallen London universe, including Sunless Sea and Sunless Skies.

About Failbetter Games

Failbetter Games is an independent games studio that makes interactive narrative games, which means games where the story and the choices you make are the main event. Most of its work is set in the Fallen London universe, a dark Victorian fantasy city that has been dragged underground. Its games include Fallen London itself, Sunless Sea and its Zubmariner expansion, Sunless Skies, the romance visual novel Mask of the Rose, and Mandrake, a rural life sim that is the studio's first standalone game in a new fantasy world.

The studio was founded in 2009. Its own words for what it does are "Purveyors of only the finest examples of hand-crafted interactive narrative", and its page description says it has been "creating the finest interactive narratives by hand since 2009". Craft is the point: it values writing and world-building as much as technology. We did not find a separate list of values.

Failbetter Games Ltd is a UK company, and its website is written in British English with a 2026 copyright notice in the company's name. The studio says it has no office, preferring what it calls ephemerality, so it works as a distributed team. We did not find a UK address or the towns where staff live on the pages we could read, so UK presence is shown by the company name and not by a visible office.

The team page lists a wide mix of jobs, which is useful if you are wondering what a story game studio really needs. Adam Myers is CEO, Stuart Young is Senior Producer and Chris Gardiner is Director of Narrative. There are senior writers and an editor, an Art Director and Lead Artist, a Communications Director, an Operations Manager, programmers, a Unity developer, a back-end web developer and a quality analyst. The playful way the team describes itself suggests a creative, friendly and slightly eccentric culture, but that is the studio's own tone, so judge it for yourself.

If you like writing, art, design or programming, the roles above show how these skills fit together in a small team. Playing Fallen London, which is free to try in a browser, is a good way to see what the studio is like. Reading how its writers handle choice and consequence will tell you quickly whether you would enjoy that kind of work. Because the studio is small and works without an office, clear writing and good communication matter a great deal, since much of the team's work is done remotely and in text. Reading the studio's blog posts and trying a short free story game of your own in a tool such as Twine are inexpensive ways to learn how branching stories work.
