A UK company offering wills, probate and funerals online, with the aim of changing how people deal with death.
Farewill offers online wills, probate and funerals. A will says what happens to your money and belongings when you die, probate is the legal process of sorting out someone's estate after they have died, and a direct cremation is a simple funeral without a service. Farewill's idea is to make these things less scary, cheaper and easier than the traditional route of visiting a local lawyer or funeral director. It also offers a funeral plan launched in 2024 and works with about 50 UK charities that offer its will-writing service (Wikipedia).
Wikipedia says Farewill was founded on 24 July 2015 in London by Dan Garrett and Tom Rogers. A fintech interview says Garrett studied design at the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London, spent time in Japan working on products for elderly people, and noticed that design focused on living needs and ignored what happens after a death. The online launch was in 2016. In October 2024 Wikipedia says it was acquired by the funeral services provider Dignity. The About page gives the head office as Maidenhead and the footer shows a Sutton Coldfield address, while older sources placed it in Dalston and Haggerston in East London, so check where it works from now.
Its About page headline is about changing the way the world deals with death, and it says it wants end-of-life processes to be less stressful, less costly and more personal. In the interview Garrett also described the goal as to 'build the first consumer brand of death'. Wikipedia notes it does not state a formal mission beyond this.
Farewill's main services are wills (the interview says a basic will was a flat £90 and is reviewed by specialists before reaching the customer), probate help, funerals and cremations, and lasting powers of attorney, which let someone you trust make decisions for you if you cannot. Wikipedia lists direct cremations from £980 and an annual will-update subscription as of 2020. The interview says it gave free wills to the NHS, about 10,000 of them.
It describes a team of legal and funeral specialists plus product and software experts across the UK. The interview says Farewill is 'relentlessly focused' on simplicity, friendliness and ease, and uses a bright yellow brand and friendly marketing to take the grimness out of the topic. A graduate-site profile says staff backgrounds are diverse and customers are at the heart of everything it does, which are the company's own claims. It has a talent bank for wills and probate roles and has advertised a senior probate solicitor role. We found no graduate scheme, apprenticeship or internship, so check its careers page.
