A London-founded peer-to-peer rental platform where people borrow items such as cameras, tools and camper vans from each other; relaunched as Hygglo in November 2025.
Fat Llama is a rental marketplace for things people only need now and then. Owners list items they do not use every day, such as cameras, drills, DJ equipment, camper vans or even hot tubs, and neighbours rent them for a few days at a time. Borrowers and lenders usually meet in person to hand items over and can share advice on using them. Every rental is covered by insurance and the platform checks identity, so people can lend with some confidence. Creative workers such as photographers and DJs became some of the biggest users, and some lenders were reported to earn up to £8,000 a month.
The company was founded in London in early 2016 by Chaz Englander, Rosie Dallas and Owen Turner-Major. They had left corporate jobs and spent weeks renovating a co-working space, and found it hard to rent single-use tools such as industrial vacuums, which led to the idea. Mr Englander said their only option was a rental shop on the other side of town. Its motto was "Things should be used". After merging with Hygglo, the Nordic region's biggest rental marketplace, in 2022, the company became Hygglo on 24 November 2025. The new brand says its mission is to "make it affordable and convenient to get any item, anywhere".
Fat Llama was based in London and, as the UK's largest peer-to-peer rental platform, served lenders and borrowers across the UK. It also worked in New York. The Hygglo brand now runs one platform across the UK, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, the United States and Canada, with the same team and a UK site at hygglo.com/uk. Because of the rename, the old fatllama.com address redirects to Hygglo. Check which name current roles use if you are applying.
On the environment, the company presents renting as a way to cut the manufacturing and delivery emissions involved in everyone buying their own item. A study by the consultancy Concito estimated that users avoided about 20,414 tonnes of carbon dioxide in 2018 in the film and photography category alone. That is a figure from a third-party study of one category and from some years ago. We did not find a detailed description of internal culture, and the company's pages we read said little about its workplace.
The jobs in a platform business include software and mobile app developers, data and risk specialists who work on identity and trust, customer support, marketing and community teams, and partnership and operations staff. It is a good example of how a technology start-up can make sharing and reuse easier. For the current shape of the UK team, check the Hygglo website.
