Fidelis Insurance Group

A specialty insurer and reinsurer with a London underwriting business, covering areas such as political risk, marine, aviation, energy and credit.

About Fidelis Insurance Group

Fidelis Insurance Group is a global specialty insurer and reinsurer. It writes cover for hard-to-place risks, with a particular strength in specialty lines. A directory entry lists its primary line as property and casualty, and its UK business started with political risk, war, terrorism and political violence, space, specialist marine and energy products.

The group was founded in 2015, with Richard Brindle as its group chief executive. Its London business received approval from the Prudential Regulation Authority and began underwriting in December 2015. We did not find a formal mission statement or published values, so we do not quote any here. The UK business was led at launch by Dan Burrows as UK chief executive, with Nick Burkinshaw as chairman of specialty. Its UK arm held an AM Best financial strength rating of A- (Excellent) when it opened.

Fidelis operates from Bermuda, Ireland and London, with separate chief underwriting officers for each, and the UK chief underwriting officer reports into the group head of underwriting. In London, a related business called The Fidelis Partnership has won Lloyd's approval for syndicates: Syndicate 3123 started in 2024, and Syndicate 2126 was announced in October 2025. The Partnership's London teams include property direct and facultative, credit, energy and cargo, with named heads such as Grahame Dawson, Mel Puskar, Oliver Searles and Jamie Graham promoted in March 2026. Its syndicates are expected to write well over a billion dollars of premium between them, and its lines span marine, aviation, political violence and property catastrophe.

Fidelis does not describe its culture in the pages we could read. Trade press shows a team that mixes people who have been there for years with experienced hires, for example specialty heads who came from brokers and other insurers, and it shows teams being promoted from within, including in March 2026. The Partnership describes its ambition as building the largest and most diversified independent managing general underwriter in the world.

People in a specialty insurer work as underwriters and underwriting assistants, analysts who model catastrophe and portfolio risk, claims specialists, finance, legal and compliance teams, and operations and technology staff. Because Fidelis writes across many lines, there are varied routes to learn the business on the job. In November 2025 it appointed William Waddell-Dudley as UK chief underwriting officer, with more than 20 years in specialty underwriting, and named Ian Houston as group chief underwriting officer overseeing its London expansion.
