A Liverpool studio, part of PlayStation Studios, that makes immersive story-led games for PlayStation.
Firesprite is a video game development studio based in Liverpool. Its website calls it "an innovative First Party PlayStation development studio" and uses the tagline "Where Immersive Experiences Meet Unforgettable Storytelling". Its homepage currently promotes Until Dawn 2, due on PS5 in January 2027. Before that, the studio worked with PlayStation on The Playroom and The Playroom VR.
The studio was founded in 2012 by people who came out of Sony's Studio Liverpool, the team behind the Wipeout games. Its managing director Graeme Ankers has said Firesprite aims to bring something new to games or genres, and that working with new technology drives its work. We did not find a formal mission or values statement on the pages we could read, so those words are the leaders' own, from news coverage.
In September 2021 Sony Interactive Entertainment announced it would acquire Firesprite, which became part of PlayStation Studios. Day-to-day running stayed with the existing management team, and Sony said it hoped to grow the PlayStation presence in Liverpool. The studio's website shows a 2026 copyright notice in the name of Firesprite Ltd. Liverpool is the only location we found for it.
Sony's chief executive at the time, Jim Ryan, praised the team's ability to go beyond traditional gameplay. A games industry fan site reports that the studio has around 250 staff, but we could not confirm that figure from an official source, so treat it as an estimate. We did not find descriptions of team culture on the pages we read, and the careers link on the homepage showed no open roles when we looked.
Story-led games need many different skills. A studio of this size employs designers, writers, artists, animators, programmers, audio staff, producers, testers and the people who handle recruitment, finance and communications. A good way to prepare is to play narrative games critically, notice how they use camera, sound and pacing, and read the studio's news page to see which roles and projects it talks about. PlayStation first-party studios also work closely with colleagues across Sony, so teamwork between studios, clear communication and a willingness to learn new hardware are useful skills. Its tagline about immersive experiences and unforgettable storytelling is a good clue to the kind of work it wants to be known for, and you can read about its previous games to see how they were put together.
