About Foot Anstey

Foot Anstey is a law firm based mainly in the south of England that advises businesses and individuals. Its solicitors work in corporate and commercial law (company deals and contracts), dispute resolution, employment law, real estate, and private wealth and succession (tax planning, wealth management and family law). The firm's profile says its employment team is the largest of its kind in the South West and its work focuses on sectors including banking, energy, property, media and technology, and retail. A separately regulated sister firm, Enable Law, handles clinical negligence, personal injury and mental capacity cases.

We could not find the firm's founding story. Solicitor News lists its offices as Bristol, Exeter, London, Plymouth, Southampton, Taunton and Truro, and says it has 53 UK partners and 382 other fee-earners. The managing partner is named as Martin Hirst, and it says the firm plans to grow organically with targeted recruitment. The firm's trainee page says trainees choose a base office in Bristol, Exeter or Southampton and work across all three depending on their seat. A Belfast training contract has also been advertised.

We did not find a formal mission statement. The firm says it 'invests in people and technology to deliver value, quality, and innovation', and describes community, environmental and equal opportunity commitments. These are the firm's own words.

On the people side, the firm's early careers page highlights expert supervision from senior staff, early client contact through its Virtual Trainee Programme and secondments, and Legal Cheek ratings for peer support and work-life balance, which are the firm's claims. It says it values authenticity and responsible AI use and asks applicants not to copy and paste AI-generated answers. Benefits listed include birthday leave and sabbaticals, a health cash plan, enhanced parental leave and pension investment.

The training contract has four six-month seats across different teams covering seven key sectors, with seats allocated by ranked preference. The firm typically takes 12 to 15 trainees a year. Direct applications open on 2 November 2026 and close on 1 March 2027 (as at 2026). Vacation schemes are one week, paid, with live casework and an assessment centre day: Achieve, for underrepresented groups, starts the week of 5 April 2027, and Aspire, open to all, starts the week of 21 June 2027, both closing on 18 December 2026. A vacation scheme is not required to apply. Academic requirements are considered in context, such as the school attended, rather than grades alone. A Legal Apprenticeship is offered and the Advance programme supports paralegals through the SQE, the exam route to qualify as a solicitor. The firm covers SQE and course costs. The Belfast listing gave a salary of £25,000 and a closing date of 23 October 2026; Northern Ireland has its own route, so check with the Law Society of Northern Ireland. The firm's page did not state a salary for the south-west contracts.
