Freetrade

A London-founded investing app that lets people buy and sell shares and funds commission-free.

About Freetrade

Freetrade is a mobile investing app. It describes itself as a commission-free app to buy and sell shares, with stocks, ETFs (exchange-traded funds, which are baskets of investments you buy as one) and ISAs (tax-efficient savings and investing accounts). Wikipedia says you can trade UK and US-listed shares and ETFs, with fractional shares in US securities (buying a slice of a share rather than the whole thing), and that it also offers SIPPs (a type of pension account), gilts and Treasury bills.

Freetrade was founded in London in 2016 by Adam Dodds, Davide Fioranelli and Andre Mohamed, according to Wikipedia. It received a licence from the Financial Conduct Authority (the FCA, the UK financial regulator) in 2017, launched its iPhone app in October 2018 and its Android app in April 2019. Adam Dodds stepped down as chief executive in 2024, and Wikipedia reports a further change of chief executive in June 2026. In 2025, IG Group, a listed trading company, agreed to buy Freetrade and the deal closed on 1 April 2025, so Freetrade now sits within IG. Wikipedia gives its headquarters as London and its headcount as about 108 in 2025.

It aims to make investing accessible and affordable for everyone. We did not find a longer formal mission statement on the pages we read, so that wording is only implied by how it describes itself.

Its main products are share dealing without per-trade commission, ISAs and SIPPs, and Freetrade Plus, a paid premium tier launched in 2020 with extra securities and order types. Wikipedia says ISA and SIPP accounts became free on all plans in 2025 to 2026. Its technology runs on Google Cloud, and its site lists stocks, ETFs and ISAs on the app. It earns money mainly from currency exchange fees, interest on cash balances and optional subscriptions.

We did not find a culture description we could verify from Freetrade itself, and its careers page was not read, so ask about working life at interviews. Job adverts on aggregator sites show London-based engineering roles such as software, platform and Android engineers, suggesting a team built around product and engineering, and the app is an example of a small firm building consumer products. We did not find graduate schemes, apprenticeships or internships, so check Freetrade's careers page for current openings.
