A Newbury-based UK cloud communications company that provides business phone and unified communications services through resellers and other partners.
Gamma Communications is a UK telecoms company that specialises in what the industry calls unified communications as a service. In simple terms, it provides cloud-based business phone, messaging and contact-centre tools that businesses use instead of buying their own phone systems. Gamma mostly sells through partners: the trade article we read says over 1,500 UK resellers and managed service providers rely on its network and products, so many people use Gamma technology without knowing the company's name.
Gamma was established in 2001 by Phil Corbishley and Paul Banner after buying the assets of distressed telecoms firms, including the network of Atlantic Telecom. It has since grown through acquisitions, including Mission Labs in Lancashire, which added contact-centre software, and several businesses in Europe. Its products include Horizon, a hosted business phone service launched around 2011, and it has joined Microsoft's Operator Connect programme to connect Microsoft Teams to phone networks. The pages we read do not give a formal mission statement, so we have not invented one.
Gamma's head office is in Newbury, Berkshire. The trade article lists switching centres in London, Manchester and Glasgow and a national fibre network of around 2,500 kilometres. Mission Labs brought a Lancashire presence, and Gamma also operates in Germany, Spain and the Benelux countries. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange, and Wikipedia names Martin Hellawell as chairman and Andrew Belshaw as chief executive. Gamma also provides the voice technology behind O2 Daisy's cloud communications platform.
We found no first-party material on culture or headcount, so we do not describe either. A company like this needs software engineers, network and voice engineers, product managers, data analysts, partner and account managers, customer support, finance and legal specialists, and people to manage resellers. Because Gamma works through partners, communication and relationship skills matter as much as technical ones.
We have not researched entry routes. A practical first step is to read about unified communications and see which of these job families interests you, then check Gamma's website for current vacancies in Newbury and other UK sites. Gamma is a good example of a telecoms company that most people have never heard of but whose software and network are in daily use.
