A British rail freight operator, with its main office in Peterborough, that moves containers, construction materials, steel and infrastructure trains, and also hauls the Caledonian Sleeper.
GB Railfreight, often called GBRf, is a rail freight company that runs trains for customers across Great Britain. According to Wikipedia, its work includes shipping containers from ports such as Felixstowe, bulk freight for steelworks and construction, trains for Network Rail and London Underground, Royal Mail services, and passenger charters. It also hauls the Caledonian Sleeper overnight trains between London and Scotland, a contract it began in 2015. In 2024 it listed a fleet of around 225 locomotives, including electric Class 92 locomotives and new Class 99 bi-mode locomotives on order.
The company started in 1999 as the freight arm of GB Railways. Unlike many other freight firms of that period, it did not grow out of British Rail's freight businesses. It began operating in April 2000 with an eight-year contract to run infrastructure trains for Railtrack, and in 2002 it won its first container contract from Felixstowe. The pages we read give no formal mission statement or values. A Rail Magazine article quoted managing director John Smith describing a pragmatic approach: 'We are not proud,' he said, explaining why GBRf sells space on other operators' trains and works with partners. This is a quote from the company's own leader.
Wikipedia names several UK sites. In 2021 GBRf opened an office in Peterborough with a 24-hour control centre and training simulators, and in 2024 it opened a maintenance facility in Tonbridge, Kent. It also does shunting work, which means moving wagons around a site, at places including Whitemoor, Eastleigh and Bescot, and at the CELSA steelworks in Cardiff and the Lackenby steelworks in Teesside. The older Rail Magazine article mentions Barking as a core terminal and the Channel Tunnel route through Dollands Moor, and an early container service called interhubGB between Barking and Manchester. These are older snapshots and sites change.
On people and culture, the company's own descriptions are limited. In 2019 Wikipedia reported that it had more than 900 employees. The Rail Magazine article described the management team as dynamic and ambitious about growing the company, and Smith as showing real passion for intermodal freight. We did not find staff accounts or culture surveys, and the page we read does not describe formal values.
The roles in a freight operator are many: train drivers and guards, controllers who run trains in real time from the control centre, planners who build timetables, locomotive engineers and technicians, customer managers, safety and compliance staff, and finance and IT teams. Rail freight is a good sector if you enjoy machinery, logistics puzzles or have an interest in the environment, since a single freight train takes many lorries' worth of goods off the road. The industry is changing as electric and hybrid locomotives, such as the Class 99, begin to arrive.
