About GKN Aerospace UK

GKN Aerospace designs and builds parts for aircraft and engines, from wing structures to ice protection and cockpit windows. Its own materials say it supplies more than 90% of the world's aircraft and engine manufacturers and has more than 16,000 employees in 12 countries. In the UK it has about 3,600 people, working on programmes that include the Airbus A320, A350 and A400M, the Boeing 787, the F-35 and the Gripen.

GKN Aerospace's mission, as stated on its apprenticeship advert, is advancing air travel to be faster, further and greener, and contributing to the protection of democracies. The same advert says sustainability, diversity, inclusion and belonging are central to how it works, and mentions five principles without listing them.

GKN Aerospace's UK page lists six locations. Its head office is in the Colmore Building in Birmingham. Filton, Bristol is its largest advanced aerostructures site, making wing parts for civil and military aircraft. Western Approach in Bristol makes composite wing spars and trailing edge assemblies for the A350 and A400M. East Cowes on the Isle of Wight designs, makes and repairs high-performance structures. Luton, with 400 staff, makes ice protection systems, fast jet canopies and flight deck windows. The Global Technology Centre in Bristol is a 10,000 square metre open research centre backed by a £32 million joint investment with the UK Government.

GKN Aerospace describes a "Best Workplace Culture Award", and lists 25 days' holiday plus bank holidays, a half-day finish on Fridays, a pension, life assurance, virtual GP appointments and staff discounts. These are the company's own claims. We did not find independent reviews of the culture.

The route we could read in detail is the Quality Engineering Apprentice in Bristol. It is a 48-month fixed-term contract rotating across three Bristol sites, pays £19,506 (the advert does not say per year, so check) and leads to two qualifications, a Level 4 Quality Practitioner and a Level 5 Improvement Specialist. It asks for at least four GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English, maths and science, with STEM A levels desirable. The advert was posted on 2 February 2026 for a September 2026 start, with an open evening on 17 February 2026. Search results also show a production apprenticeship at Bristol. A 2016 industry news item said Filton had trained 158 apprentices since 2009 (as at 2016).
