A Sheffield-based UK housebuilder, part of MJ Gleeson, building affordable homes mainly in the North and Midlands of England.
Gleeson Homes builds traditional brick homes at prices aimed at people who find it hardest to buy. Its homes range from one to four bedrooms: terraced, semi-detached and detached houses, bungalows and maisonettes. In the year to 30 June 2024 it sold 1,772 homes at an average price of £185,700, according to the company's own summary, and it says it aims to deliver 3,000 homes a year. It is part of MJ Gleeson plc, which also has a strategic land business that finds sites for other builders.
Gleeson states its social purpose as providing affordable homes to the people who need them most. It says that on every development a couple on the National Living Wage can afford one of its homes, and it supports local buyers and key workers through home-buying schemes. Its Community Matters scheme sponsors local junior sports teams and offers jobs and apprenticeships to people who live near its developments, according to the company.
The wider business is old. Michael Joseph Gleeson came from Cloonmore in County Galway to Sheffield as a bricklayer and, after taking over his father-in-law's firm, renamed it M J Gleeson in 1915. The company gives 1903 as its founding date. It built aerodromes during the Second World War, floated on the stock market in 1960 and later focused on housing and regeneration. Gleeson Homes is headquartered in Sheffield and has six regional offices: the Midlands; East Yorkshire; South and West Yorkshire; Tees Valley and Tyne and Wear; Cumbria; and Greater Manchester and Merseyside. Its land pipeline stood at 19,138 plots at that date.
Wikipedia reported around 800 employees in early 2023, an older figure. The company says it holds five-star customer recommendation status in all six regions, with a score of 95.3%. The focus on brownfield land, meaning sites that have been built on before, and on standard house types is what keeps costs down. We found no staff survey or culture page.
The jobs are the same range found at any housebuilder, but the standardised approach gives them a particular flavour. Site managers, trades supervisors, surveyors, engineers, land and planning specialists, sales advisers and customer care staff all work in regional teams close to the communities being built. If you want to see homes go up in towns that are regenerating, this is a company that works in exactly those places. See its website for current vacancies.
