About Goldman Sachs

Goldman Sachs is a US investment bank and financial services company. It advises companies on big deals such as takeovers, helps them raise money, trades in financial markets for clients, manages money for institutions and wealthy individuals, and runs a consumer-facing direct bank. An investment bank works with companies, governments and investors rather than everyday customers. Wikipedia says its largest source of income in 2025 was market making (buying and selling so others can always trade).

Marcus Goldman founded the firm in New York in 1869, and Samuel Sachs joined in 1882. The firm is headquartered at 200 West Street in Manhattan, with about 47,400 employees in 2025. Its first office outside the US opened in London in 1970, and in 1986 it joined the London and Tokyo stock exchanges. A 2018 trade article named Plumtree Court in London as its European headquarters. We could not confirm the size of its UK workforce or its current London address.

Goldman does not appear to publish a one-line mission in the sources we read, but its long-standing Business Principles set out how it says it works. They include "Our clients' interests always come first", "We stress teamwork in everything we do", "Integrity and honesty are at the heart of our business", and "Being diverse is not optional; it is what we must be". These are the firm's own statements.

Its main business areas are investment banking, global markets (trading), and asset and wealth management. Its Engineering division, which the firm says includes its technology teams and its strategists, works on scalable software, low-latency systems (very fast trading technology), cybersecurity and machine learning combined with financial engineering. It also runs Marcus, its consumer banking brand.

For young people, Goldman Sachs offers a four-year EMEA Degree Apprenticeship that leads to a bachelor's degree while you work. The FICC and Equities route (an Applied Finance degree) is based in London with Queen Mary University of London, and the Engineering route (a Digital and Technology Solutions degree) can be in London with Queen Mary or in Birmingham with the University of Warwick. Applications for the September 2027 intake were open, for people who are starting an undergraduate degree in September 2027. The firm also advertises 2027 Summer Analyst internships in London and Birmingham, such as in Engineering, which run for nine to ten weeks, start with an orientation and training, and put interns on real work alongside staff. Applicants can apply to up to four business and location combinations per year, and spring insight programmes and graduate analyst roles are listed in London. The firm describes itself as looking for creative collaborators who adapt to change and thrive in a fast-paced global environment, and we did not find published pay for these routes.
