Residential landlord and build-to-rent developer (REIT) · Real Estate & Property

Grainger

A Newcastle-based property company, and the UK's largest listed residential landlord, that builds, owns and runs rental homes in cities such as Newcastle, Oxford, Bristol and London.

About Grainger

Grainger owns and manages homes for rent. It calls itself the UK's largest listed residential landlord, and its approach is to design, build, develop, own and run its homes itself. Its own pages say it owns and manages more than 11,000 rental homes, and plans to deliver almost 9,000 more over five years, although one page gives about 10,000, so the exact count is not clear. The homes are in most big UK cities, including Newcastle, Oxford, Bristol and London. A team of its own employees manages them, rather than outside agents.

Wikipedia says the Dickinson family founded the business in 1912 as the Grainger Trust, to buy tenanted homes in Newcastle. It listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1983, took the name Grainger plc in 2007, and has grown through purchases of residential estates and other property companies. It is a real estate investment trust (REIT). Its stated purpose is renting homes, enriching lives. Its four values, as shown on its about page, are every home matters, people at the heart, leading the way and exceeding expectations.

Its registered office and headquarters are in Newcastle upon Tyne, which is unusual among big UK property companies, since most are based in London. Wikipedia lists projects in Aldershot, where it is building the Wellesley development (planned for 3,850 homes, including the former Cambridge Military Hospital), in Birmingham (Curzon Park), in Hammersmith in west London, and sites in London where it became build-to-rent partner to Transport for London in 2019. Build-to-rent means homes designed and built specifically to be rented, usually with on-site management.

On culture, Grainger says it puts residents and its own people at the centre. Its about page says it employs a varied team of experts, aims to give residents safe, secure homes they can rent for the long term, and encourages creative ways to improve service. It also says it invests in technology, in its people and in long-term sustainability goals. We did not find a headcount or a staff survey. Wikipedia lists Helen Gordon as chief executive; we have not confirmed this against the company site.

Because Grainger runs homes itself, a wide range of roles exists: customer service and resident support, property and building maintenance, lettings, regional management, development and design, planning, finance, legal, technology and sustainability. Many of these roles are spread across UK cities, not just London. If you like helping people, solving practical problems, design or numbers, there is a place for it. The company's website is the place to check current vacancies.
