An independent London think tank and charity, founded in 1979, that works with politicians, businesses and campaigners to build support for ambitious UK environmental policy.
Green Alliance is a charity and independent think tank based in London. A think tank is a group of researchers and policy experts who study a problem, publish ideas and try to persuade decision-makers to act. Green Alliance concentrates on the environment, working to get UK governments and political parties to take bold action on climate change and nature. Its own themes include political leadership, a low carbon future, the natural environment, greening the economy, resources and a resilient circular economy, plus a unit that works on environmental law, regulation and governance.
It was launched in March 1979 to bring an ecological perspective into British political life. One of its founders, Maurice Ash, described the group as "a bunch of optimists" rather than doomsayers. Other early figures include Tim Beaumont, Nigel Haigh, Tom Burke and Jonathon Porritt. Its stated aim today is to help the UK government meet its major environmental challenges so the country gains the social and economic benefits of responding well to the climate and nature crises. It publishes a strategy for 2025 to 2030 on its site.
Green Alliance's office is at Romero House, 55 Westminster Bridge Road, London SE1 7JB, close to Parliament, and its work is focused on the UK. Over the years it has convened the chief executives of leading UK environmental charities, set up a Circular Economy Task Force of businesses in 2013, brokered a cross-party climate agreement among the three main party leaders in 2015, and founded the Greener UK coalition in 2016 after the EU referendum, which now covers more than 60 organisations. Its achievements have won awards, including Think Tank of the Year in 2009 at the Public Affairs News Awards.
A directory entry says Green Alliance had 47 staff in 2025, up from 25 in 2024, with women making up 53% of staff; that is a third-party figure and the two headcounts look inconsistent, so treat the size as roughly 25 to 50 people. Its site links to an equality, diversity and inclusion section, outreach work and a Positive Action Trainee Scheme, but the culture itself is not described on the pages we read. Its work includes a blog called Inside Track, a podcast, and events that have hosted senior politicians.
Jobs at a think tank include policy analysts and researchers who write reports, public affairs and communications staff who take the findings to politicians and journalists, event and membership teams who run its Business Circle, and finance and operations colleagues. Studying subjects such as politics, economics, geography, law or the sciences can lead there, as can strong writing and clear thinking from many backgrounds. The Green Alliance website lists its current vacancies and trustee roles.
