The UK arm of the German container shipping line Hapag-Lloyd, with offices in Barking, Liverpool, Glasgow and Belfast.
Hapag-Lloyd is one of the world's leading container shipping lines, and Hapag-Lloyd (U.K.) Limited is its UK company. The company's UK office pages list four locations: Barking in Essex, Liverpool, Glasgow and Belfast in Northern Ireland. They show teams in customer service, sales, inland delivery, operations, accounts receivable, accounts payable and business administration. The UK business sells ocean transport and arranges the inland transport that carries a container between port and customer, and offers specialist services for refrigerated cargo, dangerous goods and oversize projects.
The group's history goes back to 1847, when the Hamburg-American Line was founded, and to 1857, when Norddeutscher Lloyd was formed in Bremen. The two merged to create Hapag-Lloyd on 1 September 1970, according to Wikipedia. The UK company was incorporated on 15 January 1936, according to Companies House, and is still active. We did not find a mission statement or list of values on any page we could read, so we have not invented one. Group figures from Wikipedia for 2025 give a fleet of 301 ships and 18,117 employees worldwide, and a trade profile gives 114 liner services connecting more than 600 ports.
The registered office is Hapag-Lloyd House, 48a Cambridge Road, Barking, Essex, which is the main UK address in the filing records. Its Liverpool office is the other long-standing base: a 2008 trade article reported that the company was consolidating two Liverpool buildings into one office at the Port of Liverpool Building for about 60 people. That is old evidence, and we did not check whether the office has since moved. The Glasgow and Belfast offices are listed on the current UK office pages, which also show opening hours on weekdays from 9 am to 5 pm.
On people and culture, we could not find a first-party description of what it is like to work in the UK business, and a London job-board profile gave no culture details. The UK office pages do show something useful, though: the work is divided into practical teams, and customers can book, amend and track shipments online through the company's digital tools, which suggests close links between customer service and technology. We have not made claims beyond what the pages show.
Careers in a shipping line's UK arm include customer service and sales staff who look after importers and exporters, operations teams who plan the movement of containers, inland delivery planners, accounts staff who handle invoices and payments, specialists for refrigerated or dangerous cargo, and business administration roles. For someone who enjoys problem solving, working with customers across time zones, or learning how a single container travels around the world, this kind of company is worth learning about.
