Harrods

The world-famous luxury department store in Knightsbridge, London, with over 330 departments and more than 5,000 staff.

About Harrods

Harrods is a luxury department store on Brompton Road in Knightsbridge, London. It sells fashion, jewellery, beauty, homeware, toys, electronics and food, and has more than 330 departments and over 20 restaurants. It offers services such as personal shopping, tailoring, watch repair, a pharmacy, a spa and bespoke cakes and hampers. About 15 million people visited in 2023.

The business began in 1824, when Charles Henry Harrod set up as a draper in Southwark, and later moved to a small shop in Brompton in 1849. The current building was designed by C. W. Stephens and opened in 1905. It is Grade II* listed and covers a five acre site. In 1898, Harrods installed England's first moving staircase. Its motto is "Omnia Omnibus Ubique", Latin for all things for all people, everywhere.

Harrods describes itself as a British luxury retailer with a global outlook, aiming to make the seemingly impossible possible for customers. Its values stress warmth and genuine care for people, going beyond expectations, acting with integrity and good judgement, taking ownership of details, and working together while valuing individuality. One of its lines is "There is no substitute for care and civility." These are the company's own words.

Harrods is based in one iconic London site, with colleagues who it says come from more than 50 countries, and over 5,000 in total. Its careers site describes eight Belonging Networks, a Learn and Connect Fest and a This Is Me storytelling series launched in 2022. Career stories on that site cover areas from beauty to the afternoon tea restaurant. These are its own published claims.

Jobs include sales and customer service in the shop, personal shopping, food and restaurant roles, beauty advisers, retail services such as parcels, and head office roles in buying, marketing, finance, technology, security and facilities. Because there is one huge site, many roles are shift based. Harrods careers stories mention colleagues moving between areas such as beauty and food, and long service celebrations held in 2024, which suggest people often stay for many years. It also runs Harrods Bank, which has sold gold bars and coins, so there is a small financial services side too. These are the company's own pages, so ask staff for their experience. Check the Harrods careers site for current roles.
