The UK arm of Hines, a worldwide privately owned property investment firm founded in 1957, which builds and manages offices, shops, student housing and warehouses in London and other UK cities.
Hines UK is the British part of Hines, a privately owned real estate investment firm founded in Houston in 1957. In the UK it works as both an investor and a developer, and its active areas are offices, shops, student housing and logistics, which means warehouses. Its UK team has managed a property portfolio across London and several major UK cities. Its London schemes have included Oxbourne House, a shop and flat development above the new Bond Street Underground station entrance on Oxford Street, The Grain House in Covent Garden, and 80 New Bond Street, which is a shop and office scheme.
The wider Hines group is large: it says it works in more than 200 cities across over 20 countries, and has been in Europe since 1991. Hines describes a "pioneering commitment to sustainability" in its press releases, but we found no formal mission statement and have not made one up. The founder, Gerald D. Hines, was an engineer who became one of the best-known property developers in the world; he died in 2020 aged 95. Hines UK itself is registered at Companies House as Hines UK Limited, which confirms its legal place in the UK.
In the UK, Hines first became widely known for Cannon Place, a large office building above Cannon Street station in the City of London. Its London team led the project, working with Network Rail and London Underground, after buying two older buildings on the site in 2002. The scheme was finished in the aftermath of the 2008 recession and the station itself was upgraded at the same time. More recent work spans the West End, Manchester Royal Exchange, central Glasgow and Edinburgh, and a shopping centre in Livingston, according to the company's own announcements.
The people running UK operations have included Ross Blair as senior managing director and head of Hines UK, Jake Walsh as managing director for acquisitions, Robbie Pitman as head of development and Emme Haycock in retail asset management, as named in company announcements which date from different years. Mr Blair said the firm believes in "recognizing and rewarding talent within the business" and in providing "an environment in which to grow a career", which is the company's own claim about its culture.
The roles in a firm like this include acquisitions teams who find and buy properties, development managers who guide construction, asset managers who look after tenants, finance and legal specialists, and sustainability staff. Surveying, planning, economics, finance and engineering backgrounds all fit. The Hines website lists UK openings and shows how the UK team fits with the wider group.
