A Leicestershire-based building materials company, formerly Aggregate Industries, with about 4,000 people at over 200 UK sites.
Holcim UK supplies materials for building and infrastructure: cement, ready-mixed concrete, asphalt, aggregates, mortar, sands and screed, building products such as paving, walling, roofing tiles and drainage systems, and construction and demolition recycling. Wikipedia says it also offers resurfacing contracting and design and project management consulting. In March 2025 the company, which had been called Aggregate Industries, changed its name to Holcim UK, pulling 25 brands together under one name.
The business traces its roots to 1858, when the Ellis family's sons and Breedon Everard leased the Bardon quarries in Leicestershire, whose granite was once carried on the Leicester and Swannington Railway. Peter Tom joined in 1956 and led the company to a London listing in 1988, and a 1997 merger with Camas created Aggregate Industries. It joined the Holcim Group in 2005. On its website the company says its mission is "to make sustainable construction a reality", with goals of making sustainable products the norm, leading the circular economy, and enhancing landscapes to support biodiversity.
Holcim UK is headquartered at Bardon Hill, Coalville, Leicestershire, and has over 200 sites with about 4,000 colleagues. Named locations include Bardon Hill Quarry, Cauldon Cement Plant, Glensanda Coastal Quarry, Millom Rock Park and Tilbury Cement Terminal. Wikipedia adds that in 2015 it gained cement works in Staffordshire and Northern Ireland, and that it upgraded Tilbury Docks and began using a new wharf at Great Yarmouth in 2024. The site has a nearest-plant finder for the full list.
On culture, the company says it is "passionate about helping Britain grow and thrive", with values of doing the right thing, working together, and making a difference, and a belief in "high performance with high integrity". It says it works in partnership with customers, supply chains and communities. These are the company's own descriptions. We did not find independent staff-experience information.
Job postings from its careers site include fixed plant operatives and general operatives, which shows the hands-on roles available at quarries and plants. Beyond those, a business of this size employs drivers, engineers, geologists and environmental specialists, estimators and project managers, and sales, finance and human resources teams. Quarries, concrete plants and cement terminals sit in or near most regions, so people can often work close to where they live. The move towards low-carbon building materials also means growing roles in sustainability, data and process engineering.
