Hubbub

A UK environmental charity that runs campaigns with businesses and councils, including the Community Fridge Network, to make greener choices easier.

About Hubbub

Hubbub is a UK environmental charity that works with businesses, councils and community groups to run campaigns that make greener choices easy and appealing. It is best known for the Community Fridge Network: free fridges in community spaces where people can share spare food instead of throwing it away. Its first Community Fridge opened in Swadlincote, Derbyshire in 2016. Other campaigns include Eat Your Pumpkin!, Off The Hanger for clothing, the Big Ballot Bins for litter, Community Calling, which rehomed over 8,000 second-hand phones, and Time After Time, an e-waste campaign.

It was built by Trewin Restorick, who announced in January 2022 that he would step down as chief executive after about eight years of building the charity. Hubbub describes its mission as inspiring action that is good for the environment and for everyone, bringing organisations together to make greener choices easier. It says it focuses on making leftovers tastier, making reuse easier, making second-hand the default, and building greener, more connected communities. It also says its values include a passion for problem solving and connecting with people, with everyday solutions that do good and feel good. It was named Charity of the Year in 2020.

In the UK, Hubbub's 2023 impact report describes work in London, Manchester and Southampton, plus UK-wide programmes. In London it ran Breaking Ground, which created community-led green spaces, and in Manchester it ran In Our Nature with community groups. It said it delivered 49 projects with 1,113 partners, and worked with 2,300 organisations. Partners named include the Co-op, Starbucks, Primark, John Lewis, KFC and Virgin Media O2. We did not find a head office address on the pages we read. It is a registered charity, number 1158700.

For culture, a charity awards judge praised Hubbub for helping other groups to run projects rather than simply growing its own organisation, saying it had "an open-source mentality from the start". The charity shares resources freely so communities can set up their own fridges. Its 2022 announcement mentions an experienced board, leadership team and employees, but we found no headcount. These are descriptions from the charity and an award judge, not our own checks.

Roles at a campaigning charity include campaign and project managers, partnership and fundraising staff, researchers who measure results, communications and social media specialists, designers, and community engagement workers. If you want to turn an interest in the environment into practical projects that people notice, such as a bin that makes litter a vote or a fridge that feeds neighbours, Hubbub shows how that can be done.
