A public services consultancy working with councils, the NHS and government to improve services for people.
IMPOWER describes itself as an “award-winning independent consultancy focused exclusively on improving public services” and tackling complex social problems. In plain terms, it works only with public sector organisations such as councils, NHS bodies and children's services, helping their leaders change how services work so that people get better outcomes. Its homepage says it helps clients “transform systems at scale to deliver better outcomes that cost less”.
IMPOWER has an operating address at 29 Clerkenwell Road, London, and is registered in England and Wales. A staff blog says it has about 90 co-workers and was founded in 2000; the website itself gives no founding date or founder names on the pages we read. A teamtailor job advert lists a hybrid office base with UK travel required.
We did not find a formal mission statement, but its careers material sets out values: respect for the people who work in and use public services, doing the right thing guided by a belief that “a better public sector is the cornerstone of a better society”, valuing differences in skills and experience, and treating employee wellbeing as a priority. These are the firm's own words.
Its work areas are adult social care; children, families and education; financial sustainability; health; and place. Its methods include EDGEWORK, its own approach to complex change, applied behavioural science (how people really behave), and an analytics practice. Named clients and projects on its website include Northamptonshire Children's Trust, Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Hertfordshire County Council, Darlington Borough Council, North Lincolnshire Council and work with Dorset's integrated care system on intermediate care (support that helps people leave hospital sooner). It publishes reports such as one on Preparing for Adulthood with ADASS. A manager's blog describes working on hospital wards, joining ward rounds and designing dashboards to track progress.
Staff describe a social, supportive culture with regular team events, personal development plans and external coaching, and the job advert lists benefits including 28 days' leave, pension, medical and dental insurance and two paid volunteering days a year. Colleagues are said to “ACTUALLY care” about public sector outcomes; that is the firm's own claim. A manager blog mentions a graduate secondment, job titles suggest apprenticeships and internships exist, and the advert we read was a Senior Consultant role from £45,000 and needed consulting experience. We did not find how early-careers applications work, so check IMPOWER's recruitment page.
