A UK professional body for people who work in telecoms, with roots going back to 1906, offering membership, a journal, professional registration and an apprenticeship scheme.
The Institute of Telecommunications Professionals, or ITP, is a membership body for people who work in telecoms in the UK. It represents individual workers rather than companies. Its own site describes it as the independent authority for the telecommunications industry, and its stated goal is bridging the skills gap in the sector. It offers professional development, coaching, mentoring and career guidance, publishes a quarterly journal, and runs events, webinars and insight visits to telecoms sites around the UK. It also helps members seek professional registrations such as ICTtech, EngTech, IEng and CEng, which are recognised marks of engineering competence.
The ITP began in 1906 as the Institution of Post Office Electrical Engineers, a body for the engineers who built and ran the national telephone and telegraph network. It was renamed several times and took its current name in 2007. Its journal has been printed quarterly since 1908. The organisation says it has represented the telecoms industry's views at national and international levels for more than a century. Charlotte Goodwill was appointed chief executive in 2022, and Tim Creswick, chief executive of the fibre company Vorboss, became chair of the board in 2023. Earlier leaders include Lucy Woods, who led it for fifteen years until 2018.
The ITP is based in the south-east of England. Its website gives its address as Paramount House, Delta Way, Egham in Surrey, while Wikipedia lists Sunbury-on-Thames in Middlesex, so the base may have moved. It has no named regional offices on the pages we read. Its insight visits take members to sites around the UK, and in 2021 it helped Vorboss set up a training academy. In January 2026 it announced a strategic partnership with Cambridge Wireless, another industry body in this segment.
The institute welcomes several types of member: student or apprentice, individual, corporate, retired and fellows, who can use the letters FITP after their name. Honorary fellows are chosen from across the industry. One early statement by a chief executive said she expected technicians and engineers to need stronger software skills as networks become software-defined, which shows the Institute's focus on keeping people's skills up to date. We found no culture statement or staff stories.
Jobs at a professional body include membership and events staff, people who run learning and professional registration, editors and communications staff, and the team that manages its apprenticeship scheme, which recruits, trains and mentors apprentices for partner employers. It also gives a useful view of the whole industry for anyone considering a telecoms career, because members range from network engineers to customer-service teams. Its website lists current vacancies and membership options.
