A British commercial broadcaster and producer behind ITV1, ITVX and ITV Studios, making shows such as Good Morning Britain.
ITV plc is one of the UK's best-known media companies. It runs the ITV family of channels, including ITV1, ITV2, ITV3, ITV4 and ITV Quiz, and the streaming service ITVX, which launched in December 2022 and describes itself as Britain's first integrated advertising and subscription funded streaming platform. It also owns ITV Studios, which makes programmes in the UK and around the world and sells them on. The company is organised in two parts: Media and Entertainment, which runs the networks and the ITV News Group that oversees the regional ITV licensees, and ITV Studios, which covers production in the UK and abroad and a Global Entertainment arm that sells programme rights. ITV2, launched in December 1998, is aimed at 16 to 34 year olds, while ITV4 (2005) shows sport, cult films and action series.
ITV plc was formed on 2 February 2004, when Granada bought Carlton Communications and took the ITV name, but its roots go back to the regional ITV companies of the 1950s and 1990s. We did not find a formal mission statement on the pages we read, so we cannot quote one. What the company does show is a long record of mass-audience television, from morning news to drama and entertainment. Its history includes the 2005 purchase of the SDN multiplex, the 2015 purchase of UTV and a majority stake in World Productions in 2017. The CITV children's block was wound down in April 2026, which shows how quickly the television landscape is changing.
ITV is headquartered in London. Over the years its regional network has included sites in Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, Birmingham, Southampton and other places, and ITV1 is licensed across 13 of the 15 ITV regions. Programmes made or shown include Good Morning Britain and Lorraine, and ITV Studios part-owns World Productions, the maker of Line of Duty. The chief executive is Dame Carolyn McCall and the chairman is Andrew Cosslett. ITV also holds a 40% stake in ITN, the news company that makes news for several channels. The company moved from the FTSE 100 to the FTSE 250 in mid-2022.
A company this size employs people in many kinds of jobs: producers, editors, camera and sound crews, journalists, schedulers, marketing and advertising sales teams, data and technology staff, lawyers and finance teams. Because it both broadcasts and produces, there is a wide mix of creative and business roles under one name.
Please note that in July 2026 ITV announced the sale of its Media and Entertainment division to Sky, subject to regulatory approval, with ITV Studios continuing as a producer. This is reported on Wikipedia and should be checked on ITV's own site before you rely on it. We have not researched careers pages, so look at ITV's website for current roles.
