About Jagex

Jagex is a British games developer and publisher based near Cambridge. It is best known for RuneScape and Old School RuneScape, two online role-playing games that millions of people have played, with a huge world, quests and skills to build. It has also made or published games including Melvor Idle, Space Punks and RuneScape: Dragonwilds, which its site says reached one million copies sold in eight months while in early access. Its site says RuneScape has welcomed over 300 million accounts since launch.

Brothers Andrew and Paul Gower founded Jagex in 1999 and started work on RuneScape that year. The game launched in January 2001, and the company grew from 29 staff in 2003 to over 500 by 2012. A 2024 listing shows about 495 employees. Jon Bellamy became chief executive in March 2025. Jagex's own site has no formal mission statement, but says its focus is growing and looking after the RuneScape universe across several games, built to last for decades. In 2026 it marks 25 years of RuneScape. Old School RuneScape launched in 2013 after a player vote, and in 2024 and 2025 it added its first new skill, Sailing.

Jagex is headquartered in Cambridge. Its own website lists one location, Granta Park near Cambridge (CB21 6DP), and describes a diverse team of creators, technologists and storytellers who care about their worlds and communities. Wikipedia mentions studios abroad, such as Gamepires in Croatia, but did not list other UK offices, so Cambridge is the only UK site we can confirm. Wikipedia also gives Cambridge Science Park as an address, so check where you would be based.

Since 2004 Jagex has supported charities through donations, auctions and in-game events such as the Well of Goodwill. The game itself is shaped by its players, who vote on updates to Old School RuneScape, which gives the team a close link to its community. We did not find the company's own words about its working culture, so ask about it at interview.

An online game that has run for over twenty years needs a wide mix of people. Programmers keep servers and game code working, designers and writers create quests, artists build the world, and community and support staff talk to players. Testers, producers and data analysts also play a part. The company says it is entering a new era of player-led growth, with its largest investment so far in games and services in 2026, so many of its jobs are about running live games well.
