About Kelly Group

Kelly Group is a UK telecoms engineering contractor. It sends trained field engineers to install and fix the connections that carry broadband, phone and television services into homes and businesses. Its work includes service delivery for Openreach, the company that owns most of the UK's phone and broadband network, and building fibre connections, including work on blocks of flats called multi-dwelling units. It has also supported Virgin Media's build projects, and its news pages feature fibre engineers on those projects.

The group says it was formed to support the emerging UK cable television market and installed its first customer cable television service on 17 September 1985. It describes more than 35 years in telecoms. Its Openreach Service Delivery contract began in February 2011 with just seven engineers on basic telephone installations, and the group says it has since grown to nationwide coverage. Its stated values are to be a partner of choice by delivering safe, innovative, efficient, customer-focused solutions, and to keep the safest, most productive and most efficient workforce possible. We did not find the founder named.

The group's head office is Kelly House in Wembley, Middlesex. It says it has more than 40 national operational centres and training hubs, though the pages we read do not name them. A news article by its Director of Operations said it visits about 5,000 installations a week, with a 92 per cent first-time completion rate, and that roughly 1,000 engineers were supporting those projects, down from a peak of 1,200. The group quotes about 3,500 staff on one page and about 5,000 on another, so the true size should be checked.

The same article describes the culture it aims for: career progression, job security and upskilling staff. Field support coaches help engineers on the job, there is a lone worker safety tool with a panic button, and a performance-based reward scheme called EPIC. It says it recruits for customer care and problem-solving, which it believes can be taught on the job. Jason Chandler, its Director of Operations, is quoted saying he has an open-door policy where anyone can contact him for support. These are the company's own statements.

The jobs include fibre and copper field engineers, supervisors and coaches who support them, planners who route engineers to jobs using scheduling software, trainers in its training hubs, customer service staff, and vehicle, health and safety and finance teams. Many field jobs value practical skills and calm customer service more than a particular degree. If you like working outdoors, solving problems and seeing results the same day, a contractor like this is one of the most direct ways to help build the UK's fibre network.
