A UK construction and infrastructure services group, founded in 1928, with its head office in Manchester, that builds and maintains roads, schools, hospitals and prisons.
Kier Group is a UK construction and infrastructure services company. It builds and looks after the places and networks that public services rely on, including schools, hospitals, prisons, defence sites, roads, railways, and water, energy and telecoms networks. Its own profile says it is a strategic supplier to the UK Government with particular strengths in education, healthcare, custodial, transport and defence, that it has about 400 live projects across the UK, and that it maintains more than 21,000 kilometres of the UK road network. Among its current projects it lists the UK's first all-electric prison, which its profile calls HMP Milsike.
Kier began in 1928 in Stoke-on-Trent as Lotz & Kier, started by two Danish engineers, Jorgen Lotz and Olaf Kier. Its early work was concrete engineering, such as silos, cooling towers and chimneys, and it went on to build Highpoint I in Highgate, London, which was completed in 1935. Over the decades it has worked on the M2 Medway Bridge, the North Terminal at Gatwick Airport, High Speed 1 and the UK Supreme Court in London. It is now building sections of HS2 in a joint venture and a new prison in Glasgow to replace HMP Barlinnie.
Kier calls itself "a purpose-driven organisation" that aims to leave "lasting legacies through our work". Its values are Collaborative, Trusted and Focused, and under Trusted it says: "We deliver what we promise." It also has a sustainability framework called Building for a Sustainable World, built around people, places and the planet. These are the company's own statements, which we have quoted rather than judged.
The head office is at 81 Fountain Street in Manchester, where it moved its head-office functions in 2020 from Bedfordshire. Since 2021 the business has been organised in four UK regions: London, South and Strategic Projects; Midlands and Eastern; Western and Wales; and North and Scotland. Its profile says it employs roughly 10,000 people. We did not find a list of individual offices, so we cannot say which towns and cities they are in.
Kier says it wants a safe, collaborative culture where people "belong, contribute and thrive", and describes a commitment called Expect Respect. The kinds of jobs in a firm like this are wide: site managers, civil and structural engineers, quantity surveyors, planners, design coordinators, health and safety advisers, highway maintenance teams, and people in finance, commercial, legal, digital and human resources. Maths, science, geography and design subjects all lead naturally into this work. Check Kier's website for current vacancies near you.
