The home improvement retail group behind B&Q and Screwfix in the UK, with more than 70,000 colleagues across Europe and its head office in London.
Kingfisher is a home improvement company. In the UK it owns B&Q, the DIY and home store, and Screwfix, the trade tools and building supplies retailer, plus TradePoint, a trade brand linked to B&Q. In Europe it owns Castorama and Brico Depot in France and other markets, and Koctas in Turkey through a joint venture. Together it has over 1,800 stores across seven European countries.
Its purpose, in its own words, is "Better Homes. Better Lives. For Everyone." Kingfisher says it believes a better world starts with better homes and that it aims to help make this happen. The company says it has over 70,000 colleagues across the group. It is registered in England at 1 Paddington Square, London.
In the UK, B&Q's large out-of-town stores sell paint, kitchens, bathrooms, garden products, tools and building materials, and it has an online service. Screwfix began in 1979 in Yeovil, Somerset, as the Woodscrew Supply Company, with the Screwfix Direct name appearing in 1992. Kingfisher bought it in 1999. Screwfix has over 900 stores across the UK, Ireland and France, as of April 2024, and more than 14,000 employees in 2023. Its head office remains in Yeovil, and it has a goal of 1,000 stores.
People at Kingfisher work in stores, on tills, as colleagues advising on products, and as trade counter staff. Others work in distribution and supply chain, product design and sourcing, merchandising, marketing, e-commerce and technology, property, finance and HR. A trade retailer like Screwfix hires drivers, warehouse teams and customer service advisers as well. These are descriptions of the kinds of roles the company must employ.
Screwfix has also set a goal of running its store network on renewable electricity. We did not find a published culture statement or a list of values on the pages we read, and we did not find a UK-only count for B&Q stores or staff. Screwfix started as a catalogue and website business and says its first website launched in February 1999, so online and technology work has been part of it for a long time. Its turnover passed 100 million pounds in 2001. B&Q and Screwfix serve both homeowners and tradespeople, so colleagues learn about products from paint to plumbing.
