Kraken Robotics Services UK

The Aberdeen-based UK arm of Kraken Robotics, a Canadian company that makes underwater sonar, laser (LiDAR), battery and robot systems and surveys the seabed.

About Kraken Robotics Services UK

Kraken Robotics makes technology for exploring and understanding the sea floor. Its products include synthetic aperture sonar, which produces very sharp pictures of the seabed, a towed sonar called KATFISH, underwater 3D LiDAR, which uses lasers to map objects, and SeaPower batteries for underwater vehicles. It also provides survey services such as sub-bottom imaging, which looks into the sediment under the seabed, and acoustic coring. Its customers are in defence, energy and marine research. The UK company, Kraken Robotics Services UK Limited, is the part of the group based in Scotland.

Kraken says its mission is "to transform subsea intelligence, empowering our clients to overcome the ocean's greatest challenges." The group began in 2012 as Kraken Sonar Systems in Canada and took the name Kraken Robotics in 2017. Its values, as listed on its About page, include safety and quality first, results matter, one team with many individuals, thinking globally and acting locally, and innovation. The page also describes the company as a community of marine robotics professionals. These are the company's own descriptions.

The UK arm began as PanGeo Subsea Scotland Limited, a company that Kraken bought in 2021 and which became Kraken Robotics Services UK Limited from 1 January 2023. Its registered office is at Kingshill Park, Venture Drive, Westhill, Aberdeen, with a workshop and warehouse at Kingshill Commercial Park nearby; the ADS Group, the UK's trade body for aerospace, defence and security, lists it as a member. PanGeo's business was high-resolution 3D acoustic imaging of the sub-seabed, to reduce risk for offshore installations. The Kraken group also has sites in Canada, Germany and the United States.

We found no UK staff named and no page about the UK team's culture. A 2024 Kraken job document for a services engineer in the UK shows that it hires for the Aberdeen business, but it tells us little about the working life, so we have not described it. The company-wide values above are the best guide to the culture it wants to build.

In a company like this there are roles for geoscientists who interpret the images, offshore survey and field engineers who run the equipment from vessels, electronics and mechanical engineers, software and data processing specialists, and project and commercial staff. Aberdeen has a long-established offshore and subsea industry, so the area has many related employers. Subjects such as geology, physics, engineering, maths and computing lead naturally to this type of work.
