A London AI-for-biology company, led by a former DeepMind AlphaFold scientist, building AI models that design proteins. Its aim is computational mastery over biology.
Latent Labs builds AI models and tools for designing proteins, the molecules that carry out most of the work in living cells. Its chief executive, Simon Kohl, describes a "new era of computational mastery over biology", and says the company's biggest impact will come from empowering others with its AI models.
Simon Kohl previously co-developed AlphaFold 2 at DeepMind, the AI system that predicts the shapes of proteins, and went on to launch and co-lead DeepMind's protein design team. The company's products include Latent-X, Latent-X2, Latent-Y and a Latent-Y research tier, alongside a separate platform. Its team notes that generated designs have been validated in the laboratory, and one of its leaders describes the goal of a lab that AI systems can interface with.
The company's office is at the White Collar Factory, Old Street Yard in London. Its page describes a culture built on deep collaboration between AI and biology teams, with each side engaging deeply in the other's field, and on strong engineering. The pages we read do not name a founder or list formal values, so we have kept to what they say. Alex Bridgland is listed as a founding member of technical staff.
Protein design matters because proteins underlie medicines, enzymes and materials. Better tools could make it faster to develop new treatments.
For young people, Latent Labs shows how biology, computer science and mathematics combine. Roles include machine learning research and engineering, computational biology, software and platform engineering, and laboratory science. We have left out funding. Check the careers page for current roles; early-careers programmes are not described.
