About Legal & General

Legal & General (L&G) is one of the UK’s best-known financial firms. It helps people protect their families and save for retirement through life insurance, pensions and investments, and it looks after money on behalf of big organisations too. Its careers page calls its people insurers, investors, builders, city-regenerators and green technology champions, which shows how wide the work is.

L&G was founded in June 1836 by six lawyers, according to the company’s own history page, and early on it invested in Britain’s first railways and in property. It later listed on the London Stock Exchange and became a founding member of the FTSE 100, the list of the UK’s biggest listed companies. Wikipedia gives its head office as One Coleman Street, London, and L&G’s history page describes Cardiff as its Welsh headquarters, in a building from the 2015 Cardiff Central Square development. Staff also work in Hove, as the early-careers pages show.

L&G says there is “so much more to us than meets the eye” and that it wants to “make a real difference to society”. Its history page sums up its approach as “Investing in the long term. Our futures depend on it.” We did not find a separate values list on the graduate pages.

Its work covers savings and retirement products, life insurance, and asset management, which means investing money for clients. L&G’s history page names projects such as the L&G Mastertrust workplace pension, launched in 2013, and large pension deals including a £4.8 billion buy-in with the Boots Pension Scheme (a buy-in is when an insurer takes on a pension scheme’s promises to pay members). It also launched Legal & General Affordable Homes in 2018. The company says it no longer sells general insurance in the UK, which went to Allianz in 2020, according to Wikipedia.

L&G’s early-careers programme is called Future Talent. Graduate roles cover accounting, actuarial work (using maths to measure risk), asset management distribution, HR, investment, marketing, risk and compliance and technology, typically last 2 to 4 years and often lead to a professional qualification, and need a 2.1 degree. Internships and Year in Industry placements are also offered. Apprenticeships run from Level 2 to Level 6 in areas such as accounting, data, customer service, software engineering and financial crime, in Cardiff, Hove or London, and typically ask for three C grades at A Level (96 UCAS points). Recruitment is rolling, with graduate roles usually opening in October, and new joiners attend a Future Talent induction and networking events. Pay is not published on these pages, and apprenticeships and summer internships do not offer visa sponsorship (as at 2026).
