Lidl GB

The Great Britain arm of the Lidl discount supermarket chain, with over 1,000 stores and a head office in Tolworth, London.

About Lidl GB

Lidl GB is the British arm of Lidl, a discount supermarket chain owned by the Schwarz Group. It sells groceries in simple, no-frills stores, with many lines under its own brands, and runs the Lidl Plus app, which added a Scan and Go feature in the UK and Ireland in 2025, according to Wikipedia. Wikipedia says Lidl became Great Britain's fifth largest supermarket chain in 2026, with 8.6 percent market share.

Lidl opened its first UK store in 1994. Lidl GB's corporate site says it aims to offer "the highest quality products at the lowest possible prices" across Great Britain, and says social responsibility and sustainability are at the core of its daily operations. Wikipedia says the UK business pays the independently verified living wage and gives staff a discount. We did not find a longer mission statement.

Lidl GB's head office, called Lidl House by colleagues, is in Tolworth, in south-west London, and opened on 27 January 2022 after about three years of construction. It is a five-floor building of about 250,000 square feet for roughly 800 head office colleagues. The company says it runs 13 distribution centres across England, Scotland and Wales. Wikipedia lists 1,027 stores in Great Britain (852 in England, 113 in Scotland and 62 in Wales). Lidl in Northern Ireland is counted separately there, with 46 stores. When it opened its 900th store in Liverpool, the company said it aimed to reach 1,100 stores by the end of 2025, creating about 4,000 jobs.

The head office has flexible working areas designed to encourage collaboration, a health and wellbeing centre with exercise classes and gym equipment, an on-site barista and a canteen cooking food fresh on site. It also has the largest number of electric vehicle charging points in one UK location, and the company describes local charity work in Tolworth with SHEDx. These are the company's own claims. Chief executive Ryan McDonnell called the move a significant milestone that brings teams together under one roof.

The company's figures for colleagues vary: its 2022 press release put Lidl GB at over 26,000 employees, while Wikipedia lists 33,800 for Great Britain, so they differ by date. The jobs include store teams, warehouse and driving roles at the distribution centres, and the head office functions at Tolworth. The pages we read did not list job types in detail, so check Lidl GB's own recruitment pages for what is open.
