One of the UK's biggest high-street banking groups, with brands including Lloyds Bank, Halifax, Bank of Scotland and Scottish Widows. Its operational headquarters is in London.
Lloyds Banking Group is one of the UK’s biggest financial companies. It runs everyday banking, mortgages, savings, loans and business banking, plus insurance, pensions and wealth management. Its main brands are Lloyds Bank, Halifax, Bank of Scotland and Scottish Widows. Wikipedia reports about 65,000 employees, and targetjobs quotes the group as serving 28 million customers.
The group’s roots are very old. Lloyds Bank traces back to a Birmingham partnership of 1765, and the Bank of Scotland was founded in 1695, making it the second-oldest surviving UK bank after the Bank of England. The group took its current name in January 2009 after Lloyds TSB took over HBOS. Its operational headquarters is at 33 Old Broad Street, London, its registered office is on The Mound in Edinburgh, and it has sites in Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, West Yorkshire and Glasgow. Wikipedia says Lloyds announced in 2026 that the Halifax brand will be discontinued, which is worth checking.
Lloyds describes its purpose as “Helping Britain Prosper”, according to its targetjobs employer profile. That profile lists its values as People-First, Bold, Inclusive, Sustainable and Trust, and says the group aims to reach net zero (cutting greenhouse gas emissions to zero overall) for its own operations by 2030 and for the emissions it finances by 2050 or sooner. These are the company’s statements.
Beyond the high street brands, Black Horse (car finance) and Lex Autolease (vehicle leasing) are part of the group, and Scottish Widows provides pensions and life insurance. In 2011 it launched the Lloyds Scholars Programme with nine UK universities, giving students a £1,000 annual scholarship, a mentor and two paid internships, according to Wikipedia. The group lists employee networks including Rainbow, REACH, Breakthrough, enAble and Family Matters.
For young people, Lloyds advertises graduate schemes (roughly two years each, according to a third-party guide) in areas such as commercial banking, software engineering, data science, finance and risk, plus industrial placements for penultimate-year students and apprenticeships in areas such as technology, audit, data, cyber and HR. Its targetjobs profile names Chester and Leeds among programme locations and says applications use an online form with no CV or cover letter, followed by online assessments and a virtual assessment day. Graduates get a £5,000 settling-in payment, hybrid working of up to three days from home on many programmes, a 28-day holiday allowance and funded professional qualifications (as at August 2026). Graduate roles ask for a 2:2 or above, and apprenticeships ask for GCSE grade 4 in maths and English, per the third-party guide.
