Lookers

A Manchester-founded UK motor retailer, based in Altrincham, selling and servicing cars across the UK and Ireland for over a century.

About Lookers

Lookers is a UK car retailer. It sells new and used cars and vans, offers servicing, MOTs, accident repair and parts, and provides finance, leasing and Motability options. Its website describes it as one of the top three motor vehicle retailers in the UK and says it represents 38 volume and premium manufacturers across the UK and Ireland.

Its tagline is "A good deal. Better." The company says it aims to let customers get what they want in the way they want it, using genuine parts and its own signature care and attention. It describes its staff as dedicated, trained and experienced. We did not find a longer formal mission statement or a list of values.

Lookers was founded in Manchester in 1908 by John Looker, selling bicycles, parts and accessories. It merged in 1910 to form Lookers Ltd and was mainly a Ford dealer until the First World War, then became an Austin distributor in 1918, using the slogan "Lookers is Austin". It expanded into Yorkshire in the 1960s. Its headquarters are now in Altrincham, Greater Manchester, where it moved in July 2017 from Timperley.

Wikipedia lists brands including Vauxhall, Renault, Ford, Nissan, Volkswagen, Skoda, Kia, Honda, Hyundai, Toyota and Lexus, plus premium makes such as Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz and Audi. The group has also had a used car trade centre in Bristol and a wholesale parts distributor, FPS Distribution. Its website says it offers online buying through Click and Drive, plus in-person sales with clear pricing and either collection or delivery, and it says it offers over 7,000 new and used vehicles. Lookers is no longer publicly traded and is owned by Global Auto Holdings, linked to the Canadian dealer group Alpha Auto Group.

Wikipedia gives an employee figure of about 6,500, though this is dated. As with other dealer groups, jobs include vehicle sales, service technicians, bodyshop and accident repair staff, parts staff, finance and administration, online sales and marketing, and head office teams. It has acquired other regional dealer groups over the years, including Braid Group in 1983, Charles Hurst in 1996 and Dutton Forshaw in 2007, which is why customers may still see older local names. It has also been described as selling agricultural vehicles and machinery in some regions, and as selling Ferrari in Northern Ireland, which shows how varied the franchise portfolio is. We did not find a current showroom count or description of day-to-day culture, so check with the company.
