The London TV production company behind The Great British Bake Off, The Great British Sewing Bee and The Great Pottery Throw Down.
Love Productions is a UK television production company, best known for The Great British Bake Off. It also makes The Great British Sewing Bee, The Great Pottery Throw Down, Junior Bake Off, The Piano and Your Song, and earlier shows such as Benefits Street and The Baby Borrowers.
We did not find a mission statement. Judging by its shows, the company specialises in warm, popular programmes about people having a go at something they love, often in a friendly competition format, and in shows that bring new people into the spotlight.
Wikipedia says Love Productions was founded in 2004 by Richard McKerrow and Anna Beattie and is headquartered in London, with a Bristol-based unit, Love West, and a US arm. Anna Beattie is named as the other co-founder. Junior Bake Off and Tower Block of Commons are other shows from the company, and The Great Pottery Throw Down has been picked up for a spin-off on HBO Max, according to a trade headline. It was bought by Sky in two stages, with a 70% stake in 2014 and full ownership in 2020, and it sits within Sky Studios. Bake Off moved from BBC Two to BBC One and then to Channel 4, and has been shown on other platforms. Wikipedia also mentions Netflix shows Westside and Singapore Social. It says the 2020 series of Bake Off was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and that the programme's move to Channel 4 was widely discussed, since most of its presenters did not move with it. The company is described as having three locations in total.
Broadcast reported that McKerrow left after about two decades, and that Ralph Lee, who previously led BBC Studios Productions, was named chief executive. It also named Letty Kavanagh as managing director leaving, with Kieran Smith as creative director and Simon Evans as executive editor, which gives a sense of how senior creative and executive roles are organised. Sky's Cecile Frot-Coutaz, chief content officer and chief executive of Sky Studios, announced Lee's appointment in a staff memo. We have not read the company's own culture statements.
Behind a show like Bake Off are producers, directors, casting teams, researchers, home economists and food teams, editors, production managers, designers and finance staff. If you enjoy a particular show, find who produced it and look at the credits. Love Productions' own website is the best starting point for current projects. Because it makes shows about baking, sewing and pottery, it also works with food, craft and design specialists, and there are roles in casting, location work and post-production. A good way to start is to watch a series with the credits on and see how many different teams are listed.
